Jon since you are on the yahoo Davis group and I am not, what year is my Davis? SS # 767313! I know it is the late 1800's, but not sure of the year!

When I do that I am either sad there isn't anything interested and elated that there is a coll machine available. Where I really go off the tracks and when I start looking in somewhat nearby cities. Of course, there are 'usually' cool machines that get my heart pumpin'.

So, here is ONE of today's finds, in a nearby city that looks cool! Does anyone happen to know anything about this one? http://spokane.craigslist.org/hsh/3111662360.html
I agree with Charlee, I'd already have brought that machine home!

We had a family reunion this weekend and as we set the camper in place my DH cousin came over to me and asked if I wanted another machine. I said, well, if it's an interesting one, I could be talked into one. It belonged to his great grandmother (would also be my DH's great gramma, too) and he decided to restore it, so after many years in the barn and then the machine shed, he got it out to work on it. Sand blasted the irons and hung the foot pedal to dry and it caught the wind and fell to the concrete and shattered! He was sick and so am I now. (The largest piece looks like a star pattern). It's a Domestic coffin top, has the shuttle and all the paper work. He made a copy of the manual because of it's fragility and the warranty dates, 1881 to their great gramma!! The cousin said it was so very rusty so he had it all sanded down and primed to keep it from rusting, but of course even the silver parts are primed. The presser foot handle is on the left side of the "nose", on the faceplate. It's so interesting and I'll have it repainted black and will hunt for a Domestic logo to place on it. Everything turns, has a metal pitman, of course, I need to find a foot pedal/plate for the treadle and a belt.
Randa, welcome back! I can't wait to see a photo of that machine! It is so much fun to have a machine that was part of the family tree!

Charlee ditto to you and your 301!

Glenn not ALL Franklins were made by White. Davis also made a Franklin in/around 1911. It was a clone of Singers 27/127's with elaborate decals. Kathie on here has one of the Davis Franklins!

Nancy
Well then when I post the tutorial on cleaning the thing you guys can tell what it is. I think this one is a white. I have several Davis machines and this in not like them, but then again I really don't know I just clean and use them.

The first Franklin's in 1911 were made by Domestic for Sears and to the best of my knowledge Davis stuck with the Minnesota's. I think Domestic was bought out by White and White started making the Franklin.

Jon Jon Jon, I will not debate the Franklin - you are probably right - I just quote what I read somewhere! I guess its what you read and when you read it! Yes, there was a Franklin VS sold by Sears that White made, but I will have to look in my archives and find the reference to the machine named Franklin that was supposedly made by Davis - a clone of Singer's 27/127! Was the Franklin you are talking about that Domestic made a clone of the 27/127 with elaborate decals? Maybe, we are talking about the same machine - just a debate on who actually made it!

I love it when this stuff comes up! We can all research and learn even more!

This is my first 301....I don't think I've ever actually laid eyes on one before, and if I did, it was before I knew what I was looking at. I do know they've gone way up in price in these parts, and I was tickled pink to find one with all the goodies and in a case for the price I'm getting it for!

There was one on the local Craig's list a couple of weeks ago, they wanted $100, but it was in a cabinet with no extras at all...this one is a much better deal for me!
I'd carry mine out of a house fire, and it's on the list of things to pack if we evacuate from an earthquake! They look like little locomotives, to me, in the most charming way possible. Laura

Laura, I've wondered, if we had to evacuate, which of my machines would go with me...but then again, I have a fleet of Uhaul trucks at my disposal!! (I'm pretty sure I'd need two!)
