Wavewatcher

This is Cleo. She is a Singer 127 Sphinx Treadle Machine from 1916 (SN G4994196). She has not been altered with a motor. I purchased her off of Craig's List where the seller was selling her as an antique piece of furniture. He thoughts I was nuts when I started gingerly checking moving parts. "You are not planning to really use it are you?!" With TLC and a new belt she smoothly sews beautifully.

This one in my Baby. She is used for almost all of my sewing at home but has a younger sister that is at my Mom's and was the machine I learned to sew on. She is a 1951 Singer Long-bed Slant Needle 301 (SN NA103058). She is a quilter's dream.

Love every bit of her.

She is very neat looking and you have her so well set up. I think that this will be my next goal in the VSM world!

What do you guys think? They were headed to the trash and I had to save them. What am I looking at here? I'd like to get them sewing or find them a good home.

The treadle is a Davis Vertical Feed machine. They are especially sought after by quilters since there are no feed dogs (hence: vertical feed). They are wonderful for attaching binding to the quilt or any sewing where there are multiple fabric layers that would normally do best with a walking foot. Lucky you!

I know nothing about the other machine except that it looks to be a 15 clone based on what I've seen here on QB.

Here's my newest machine, a 1924 model 66 with the lotus decal: It was $15 and was seized up, and minus cabinet. I freed it up, removed the electric motor and put it in my '50s treadle cabinet. Much better fit!

Mike, what a nice find...where did you get her?

I missed a gorgeous old Wertheim at an op shop in Nunawading last month....it was completely seized, the box was split and it had nothing with it but its decals were really pretty and I was hankering for a project. They wouldn't bargain down from $150.000 and a week later it was gone.

I got it on ebay. starting price was $15 and nobody else bid, mainly because it was in Geelong. I had to go there anyway for a load of pattern mags, so made a day of it (it's only an hour and a bit away).
$150 is pretty exy for a non-Singer that needs that much work. If it looks old, add a zero. How do they think they can charge this and call themselves "opportunity shops". Then again, someone must have actually paid it!
Yes American friends, this is what thrift shops in Melbourne charge. ruby2shoes, you're better off at estate garage sales. Sellers still ask too much but when machines are still there at the end of the day, they're always willing to make a deal (what will they do with it?), which is how I got my 319K and its cabinet.
