The 15-91 I purchased off Ebay arrived today. It is shiny and beautiful, and was extremely well packaged. I will post pics when there is better light. However, when you sew, the stitches are perfect, but it makes a loud clunking sound. Is this normal? The machine is not in a table yet or even in a base, so maybe it will be quieter when I mount it in a table? It is so much noisier than any of my other vintage machines. What could be wrong? It has been oiled and lubed already. I can return within 14 days, but I don't know if 15-91's are just noisier or if something is wrong with it. Any ideas/suggestions????

It may be because it isn't mounted in a cabinet. One of the black vintage Singers, and my memory escapes me, does not sit properly on a flat surface. It has to be either the 201 or the 15-91 because I have never had a 66 in the house - I don't like them. Another thing you can check is the needle. Make sure it is the correct size and not bent.

I have 2 15-91's, 1 from 1934, the other from 1948. The 1934 model is as quiet as a watch ticking, the 1948 machine is much louder in comparison but not distracting by any means. I hope you get it sorted out.

15-91 needs to be set in some sort of base or else moving parts are hitting the counter. Some out of the way blocks of wood under the bed will work temporarily to see if it runs quietly if base is not available.

My daughter's 201 sits flat so it has to be the 15.

15-91 sits on my table and doesn't clunk anything.

There are a portion of 15-91s that can be run on a tabletop, without a base or needing to be mounted in a cabinet, with no problem. Then there are a portion of 15-91s whose underpinnings will strike a tabletop, creating the clunking noise; those latter machines obviously need to be mounted in cabinets or bases.

I've not been able to figure out any way to distinguish which behavior any given 15-91 will exhibit until I actually try it out.

My 15-91 does the same thing. I have to make a base for it. There were instructions here somewhere. I'll let you know if I find them again.
