I have a lovely Singer Capri, I think it is about circa 1950s but I am not sure?

It sews beautifully and I love it BUT it's foot pedal is so fierce that it sews so fast that in FMQ it is hard to control, and get a proper stitch, they are tiny cos it goes so fast.

Is there anyway to adjust the foot pedal to "tame" it a bit?

I wonder if the pedal is starting to go bad?
Maybe you can find another pedal somewhere? :D:D:D

That is a really nice machine but it is from the 70's or early 80's. as far as the pedal it sounds like it is on its way out or it was replaced with one that is not set up to be variable speed.

you could use it for a piecing-only machine. I wish mine went faster!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it is a lovely machine, I bought it for £50 year before last and love it. It seems you have put your finger right on the button as it didn't used to be as fierce as this and on checking the foot some of the screws look a bit rusty, the name of the foot is "Merrit" not Singer as I would expect.

I am very fortunate in having a lovely Man about 5 miles away who is a Vintage Machine specialist, he renovates and repairs machines from all over Wales and beyond, I will give him a call tomorrow to get a replacement for me.

The Merrit was like the Spartans with Singer, they were the lower end budget machines. But honestly they had the same quality control as the name brand Singers and a lot of the times they were the same model as the Singer name but they lacked the decals/decorations or were just missing one feature. The Spartan 192 was the same machine as the Singer 99 but lacked the name, light and were missing the bed decals. But at the same time not many were sold under the "other names" so they are a special find and are many times more valuable that he Singer counterpart.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement foot pedal, at a reasonable cost? Please, just note that I am in the UK.

I can't help you there, but my old Elna has a switch on the foot pedal to slow it down or speed it up. You might want to check I always keept it on the slower mode because it was too easy for the machine to run away if I set it on the fast mode.
