I found a manual for the 12 on the Singer site here: Singer 12 Manual.
Congratulations on both your machines - they're beautiful! What does the cabinet of the 66 look like? I agree with Skyangel; those probably are the original hardware on the 12 cabinet (I've seen them on a few old Singer cabinets, especially with that drawer style).

The 66 is not a 66-16. The -16 has a stitch control lever with a back tack feature, yours has the old stitch length knob.
It is most likely a 66-6.

The 66 is threaded correctly for embroidery and darning. For regular sewing the thread goes under the thread regulator, for embroidery and darning it goes through the eye of it.
