Default Singer 99K variants (stitch length adjustment) question

Our 99's have the backstitch feature with the round, knurled thumbnut and a red indicator to the left to show length. Screw the nut in and the lever only comes down the the set stitch length. Another style 99K has a flat metal tab but in photos(don't have this variant) I see no way the length can be locked in. Is this the case? Do you simply look to see that you are at the stitch length you want? Just wondering before we go see one some distance away that's for sale. Thanks, Don

Do you mean like the one in this article? There is a pic if you scroll down the article a little bit.

I think you just screw it in and out to adjust the length of stitch.

Thank you but no, the photo your article reference shows is the earlier version that does not sew in reverse. The one I am asking about just has a flat metal tab type lever that moves up to reverse (i guess) and down to go forward. I guess I need to keeplooking around on the web. Thank you again, Don

Does it look like this one? (Kind of hard to see since it's a straight on shot).

It looks like it might say "back tack" at the top, indicating a reverse. It looks a lot like the FW stitch length adjuster, which does also have a small nut that you can screw up or down to stop the lever. I haven't seen one in person though. Both mine have the "double pane" with the red indicator.

Sorry Bennett, I didn't get back on the forum yesterday again. Yes that's the one. Thank you once again! Don

I had one like that - dumb thing would let go and choose it's own stitch length while I sewed
