Why Can't Sewette Sew?
#12
I'm getting somewhere. Stitches on the left with the machine threaded up. Stitches on the right without threading through the tension piece and using my fingers as tension instead. I am pretty sure the tension piece is the problem. Now I just have to figure out why? I have tried adding a stitch finger without any change.

I'm not sure. I am looking around the 'net and it seems lots of clones are put together a bit differently from each other. I have some spare parts I am futzing with and I steel wool polished the spring in case it's catching.

there really are no tiny parts in the tension assembly, they are pretty simple.... a couple disks and a spring.... just pinches the thread. I think people are unreasonably scared of them, ( but then again I have messed up a lot of stuff in my life assuming I knew more than I did ) As far as your stitches... it looks as though the upper thread is no looping.
at the risk of sounding like captain obvious... are you SURE you are threading it correctly? other than that I believe you can wind the take up spring up ( or down) I am wondering if there is an extra turn of tension on you spring ? also the "split" stud that your tension assembles around is movable ( removable ) and it is possible it was removed and put back in wrong ? these are thing I need someone with actual 15 experience to chime in on.

Looking over this might help. Usually something basic we forget about or dumb mistake that trips us up.

...and here's another shot in the dark ...the two disc plates of the upper thread tension assembly can become feintly grooved by thread as it travels between the discs after many hours over many years of sewing. as long as you have it apart, clean the face surfaces of each plate with emery cloth. may not help, but won't hurt either.

On my older quilting machine -- I know, I know we're talking about a sewing machine! but -- if my presser foot is too loose, or my needle is too high in the shaft, it does the same thing. I get a stitch or two, then a skip of about 4-5 stitches, then repeat.....just saying'......
