We use a stapler where the ends of the staples "flare out". Instead of curling in to the center of the staple. The stapler is more like like a pair of pliers than a desk stapler. My DH runs the stapler and I hold the fabric and zipper in alignment. We have gone back to partially floating our quilt tops and I do pin the bottom of the quilt top to the canvas
