I happened to see a Westalee YouTube just yesterday. I saw them use the washable Crayola markers. Was noted that they only become permanent if IRONED. I'd definitely test first though.
After I sew on the binding, I always press it to one side. I use the washable Crayola markers and have never has a problem with the marks not coming out in the wash.
