Lacelady, I am going completely random with mine but in colours that reflect ochre tones as seen in a Welsh ochre mine we visited, but I am probably going with plain and all the same colour setting triangles around the edge. I love the colours on your quilt, but I do find that if I sit down for a coffee and pick up my needle it means cold, cold coffee. Yuck! Have fun counting down your last few, can't wait to see what your quilt look like.

Thanks Sarah, I'm looking forward to it too. When you said plain setting tris, did you mean no pattern, but colour, or did you mean the same as your background? I'm going to do the second option, so that my tris show up. On Jane's I think they get lost a bit.

Bear...I agree with you. I think my quilt will be MY quilt..and for some reason, I don't think Jane will mind. :lol:

I'm playing with the color for my plain tris . I'm still struggling trying to decide whether I still really want to go dark sashing though or light...I keep going all wishy washy on it. At some point I'll HAVE to make a decision..but I'm not there yet.... :oops:

Lacelady, yes I meant that I shall try to use the same colour as my sashing, a bit like the one that is on the board at the moment, but a) it means taking my blocks to the shop to lay them on loads of trial colours and b) even worse having to buy fabric. So far I have managed to buy just a few fat quarters, and if I use plain triangles my stash will go further on the blocks. It seems that we are working along the same lines.

LOL, great minds think alike, Sarah. I have just got a warmer batik for cornerstones and binding, just to add a little bit of colour, and that will do me. Have you considered somewhere like Thousands of bolts for your sashing if cash is a consideration, they seem to have good prices to me, but then all of the USA prices seem good to me compared to what's in the shops here. Even with shipping, USA prices are often cheaper. What is more, I have never seen a price reduction on fabric in my LQS in the almost 10 years she has been trading. I don't even recall her having a general sale.

What a terrific site lacelady, do you ever get problems with Customs, or are things easier in Ireland? My local store in very small and each time I go in I get this woman whose answer to anything is 'Don't ask me, I'm not a quilter' Duh!! It drives me nuts. So, I am thinking about a sort of biscuit colour but don't know yet.

When I first started getting in stuff not just for myself, but also for my quilt group, I got everything from Hancocks of Paducah. I contacted our Customs dept. who told me that all imported fabric into Ireland was subject to duty. But in reality, we don't get charged all the time. Certainly the smaller parcels come through without any being added, and we get charged on about two thirds of the larger ones. But here, it's only about 10%, and it still works out cheaper than our LQS. (She does seem to be a tad greedy). My cornerstone batik is a biscuity kind of colour! My background is Kona cotton natural, which looks like muslin (calico) but handles like a regular quilt cotton. I'll probably get that for the background, as they do it in a 108in width.

Sounds like you two have a good plan. I was thinking about using a piece of some of the blocks I'm doing for the plain tris., somewhat like Janes. But that plan could change down the road too. I kind of like the plain look like my background fabric too. Decisions??? You're so close Lace. I have done 100 blocks and tris so far. Had to slow down abit with work getting in the way.

When I first decided to do this quilt, I was going to use Civil War Reproduction fabrics. After looking around, I found my star fabrics with a reduced price, so there it was, decision made! I was going to cut fabric from each of my fat quarters for the plain tris, but now I am considering using my cream fabrics for the plain tris and only that color so the pieced tris will stand out! I think the binding is going to be dark red or black.

I like a random look for a quilt this busy. However, when laying flat I want it to have a pattern emerge of colored diamonds through the quilt, so its a little surprise. Time will tell, I will go with the flow of the quilt for layout and finishing... :)

What is your average time on a block/tri? I feel like I'm a little slow, it takes me around 2 hours most of the time. That includes printing the pattern, selecting the fabric...all of it start to finish, or should I say start to unfinished block!

I work full time, so I try to spend some time in the evening sewing, but the weekly schedule is sometimes hard to stay on.
