Kite - Top Right Corner

As you can see, I'm too nervous to trim it properly (again.) I think I'll go ahead and cut a full size template out of template plastic to use over the top to trim. I've been trying to draw the lines on the kite by seeing through the fabric to the pattern (underneath) but it's not easy.

I decided to do this a little differently than auntreen or thatquilt. I paperpieced both stars. If I were to do it again I'd reduce the center white start just a little to make sure the tip of the stars aren't cut off. I knew I'd never get crisp points if I tried to applique or reverse applieque those stars.

Thanks for the tips SewNso and Katybob, I'll look at the link.

Havent been visiting the board the last couple of days as I have been going to the Glendale Quilt Show and taking a couple of classes. Phew...awesome, but too much at once!! Love the kites katybob & Cindy!

Got a couple of pointers while taking the classes... first the handquilting I shared - dont think I'm hand quilting Jane this time [not that I'll do her again.... there's others out there I would like to tackle and have to complete!]
The class I took from Deb Karasik was phenomenal!! Cant say enough positive things about her as a person and her teaching and abilities - if you ever have an opportunity to take a class from her do so! you will not be disappointed. She actually has many of her pointers free on her website and here is the one about points...
http://www.debkarasik.com/userfiles/...ct%20point.pdf
If you go back to the main website she has, you can pick up some more info. She is definitely the paper-piecing queen and she judges many quilts. She taught that you should sew your outer points 'inside the box' that creates the point so it doesn't get cut off. Not that ever intend to enter anything into a show.... other than my personal guild. But this is actually something I have always done myself as well without thinking about it. It doesn't have to do with reducing a pattern with points as much as it does making sure that you sew a thread or two away from the sewing line that could potentially cut the point off. Just think about the fact that the sewing seam and the fabrics that meet the seam all adds thickness. Even if you catch the same point in the fabric in your straight seam as the point, it will 'bubble up' to create the illusion of having the point cut off. You would have to press the hell out of it and by that time you will also have stretched your fabric because if there is a point, there is also a bias edge.

I finished I5 finally - week of Jan 27 - but need to trim it and all my sewing stuff is in my car because I have another class with Gwen Marston tomorrow - so the picture will have to wait. I sewed J8 & 9 the first week of Feb at our quilt retreat and will start J10 &11 tonight. Will show pics when the four is done [J8 & 9 are appliqued and the book pattern looks accurate so no real tips here!

have a great Paddy's Day!! off to make corned beef & cabbage.... Forgot the Harp beer and beef stock - should've started earlier..... this one maybe only part crock and part stove top...

Great tips and thanks for the link. I always seem to err on the outer side (and therefore cut off points!!) maybe this will help me get it right. Sounds like a great weekend and probably tiring, too.

As I start working on J-10 I have to say I will definitely come up with another way to make her. It seems to me that although Jane did applique the melons on the outer border section, the melons are either reverse appliqued, or the triangle pointy sections in the middle square are appliqued on top to make the melon background come out. I dont know if this makes sense, but I will take pictures while I make it. I may not finish this until Tuesday as I have a class all day tomorrow and a guild meeting in the evening.

katy bob, i had a miniture heavy duty pair of sissors, that i used to pull the needle thru at times. i think my mom had used them yrs ago. i seem to remember on some of her thicker quilts. and they were hers in her sewing stuff. it would help, if your jane was out somewhere close so you could get to her a odd times.

Thanks, sewNso. I have some of those little rubber discs that are made to pull the needle through tough spots, but I haven't run into a spot where I needed it yet. My problem is the rocking thing.

Week 62 (Wow! We started this 62 weeks ago??)

You're right, Gus. J-10 was a tough one. I'm satisfied with the center melons, but I think some of the points of the outside melons will be cut off when the sashing's added. This one's marked for a re-do. Lots of applique in this week's blocks.

I don't know, Katybob. From the picture it looks like you might just barely make it without cutting off the points (?) They look great, as usual. I really love the green in J-9, especially this time of year.

Cindy - I love the blocks!! I wouldn't redo them - Look instead at Jane's quilt and realize that all of her sashing is not the same size.... actually she had no sashing! You can 'custom cut/adjust' the width of the sashing around random blocks so that points are not cut off [unless you are planning to enter the finished product at Paducah ] But your melons are well made - only potential problem is the cutting of the points. Your other option if you dont want to adjust sashing and it looks like they will cut off if you lay your Jane ruler or other 4 1/2" square over the block - carefully remove the stitching in just the points of the melons .... the last third or half ....and restitch by hand to bring it closer in. I wouldn't redo the whole thing at all. My option would be the sashing adjustment.

Here is my I5 [week of Jan 27] I marked the center section onto the print, cut four melons and appliqued to the mark and put that aside. I cut a 5 1/2" square of background and transferred the outer curves to that. I cut a 5" square of print and transferred the circle to it and then basted the two squares together, background on top, white trimmed 1/4-1/2" towards center of curved marking. I next reverse appliqued print under background, laid my center piece underneath and reverse appliqued the center. Similar to thatquilt.com, but I think the explanation is confusing...

It's taking longer to applique J10 than I had expected....you're right Cindy - lots of applique this week! I love it but what was I thinking???? Sorry ladies! Of course, by now we are all on our own schedule
I have appliqued one corner each of the last two evenings [and have been busy the rest of the day]

I did want to show you my approach so I took a picture showing the two corners appliqued on the background which is cut larger than finished 'cut size' ... about 5 1/2"- 5 3/4"
I will reverse applique the center section to the top containing the corner melons when I am done. To make the center section, I will cut four print pieces using the template shown and hand stitch to background melons. At this point I think if I stitch exactly to the corner points at the center and not beyond to the edge of the fabric, it will lay smoother. But I will keep you posted...

Have fun!!
Gus
