Hi Everyone,
I know most of you are waiting to see the new BOM pattern for January, so I won't keep you any longer!! It's called Sunflower. I picked this one hoping to brighten everyone's January days!!
Have fun & don't forget to post your finished block so we can all see them.

http://www.bluemountainquiltersguild.../Sunflower.pdf (due to recent changes at the referenced website, this link may not work for everyone)

Have Fun,
Cheryl
:D :D :D

************ Moderator's Note************
I found the block elsewhere. The block is included in Maggie Malone's book, "5,500 Quilt Block Designs". It's #448, on page 40.

Very basic instructions can be found at the Quilter's Newsletter website. Go to this page, scroll down a bit until you see the image, and click on the word "Sunflower".

http://www.quiltersnewsletter.com/ar...tacular_Blocks

they provide a piecing diagram along with both templates and rotary cutting dimensions. the rotary cutting are in small print, with diagrams, inside the templates.

if you set page scaling to "none" before your print from adobe acrobat reader, the templates print at the correct size for a 12" block (12-1/2" unfinished).

if you cannot open the instructions, it means you don't have a recent enough version of adobe acrobat reader installed on your computer. to solve that problem for free, just go to http://www.adobe.com and click on "get adobe reader". follow the extremely easy instructions for installation.

Oh thank you Cheryl. I thought it would be a way to keep me focused on checking in, having a little fun, and keeping up with people. I seem to drift in and out of the forum if im not focused lol. Thanks so much Cheryl, this will be fun :)

adrianlee 01-01-2010 10:40 PM

Beautiful and sunny block. Love it. I'm going to tag along with the BOM and just maybe I'll have a quilt done by the end of the year. Thanks for picking out a neat pattern.

patricej 01-02-2010 12:01 AM

the block seems to have disappeared from that website.

go back to the top of the topic for a new link.

Elisabrat 01-02-2010 08:32 AM

Thank you very much for fixing the site for everyone. Off to the fabric store at 10 to try a couple ideas.. of course if I like them both that could mean two quilts .. one for me, one for Christmas.. hey.. not a bad idea. I can make two blocks a month. Phew!

jan10 01-02-2010 10:16 AM

I like this block. Am on my way to my LQS as there is a sale today - will look for some bright and cheery fabric. I tend towards blue and yellows.

Hi - Love the block and would like to join in this BOM with making the blocks. Does the BOM link for everyone making this always appear on the daily page please Cheryl? I have not done one of these before. Your block is lovely, by the way.

Wings,
I am glad you like my January block. We are so glad to have you join us this year. If you can't find this link of the main page go to recent topics & click on forum. Then look for the Block of the month topic. After clicking on this thread, scan down the page looking for the 2010 BOM heading for each month. They will be posted the first day of each month, of the year. I hope this answers your question. If not feel free to ask again!!
:D :D :D :D

Wings 01-02-2010 02:16 PM

Thanks Cheryl - understand now! Looks like a lot of fun. Also a way to use up some of my stash. Have done a BOM with a quilt shop by mail here but it is a tad lonely on your own and you know the outcome before you begin, where this way it is full of surprises each month. Woohoo.:)

littleone 01-02-2010 07:22 PM

Count me in for this BOM. I've only done one BOM that involved creating your own machine embroidery design for each block. I loved doing it as each month was a surprise. I have already set my annual goal to complete a UFO each month and make a quilt for SIL; I may be creating another UFO but will have fun doing so.

amma 01-02-2010 11:17 PM

This is a beautiful block and an awesome start to a new year of BOM's :D:D:D

Ladybugnana 01-03-2010 01:19 AM

I am also looking forward to this. I have never done a BOM like this. I appreciate that the link is a pbdf file as I can open those. Any that are Word doc I can't open. Thanks again@!

zennia 01-03-2010 06:22 AM

SulaBug, I love the block your chose to start off 2010. Its a beauty. I am trying not to get to involved with new projects this year but I have to do this one. Count me in for the 2010 BOM.

Nancy in Louisiana 01-03-2010 09:44 AM

OK -- ya got me. Your sunflower BOM was the clincher. I hope I can figure out the pattern from the printout.

Nancy in Louisiana 01-03-2010 09:47 AM

Nevermind- I just found the directions on Bluemountain site. Looks like a good candidate for the doll quilt swap.

adrianlee 01-03-2010 09:49 AM

I'm sorting my stash, New Year's Res, organize my bins back into their proper colors. I found a neat pansy piece for the middle block of BOM. I'm sure I'll find the rest of the needed colors for this block. This is so neat as I've never taken part in BOM's before.

Dani 01-03-2010 10:17 AM

Count me in on this block of the month! I'm so excited! My problem is I want to do everything (Dear Jane) etc.etc. But I usually don't do anything. I think my friend, Judy, will want to do this with me (she's gone right now). We usually get together one day a week to work on some kind of project we are both doing. I'm going to fine fabric in my stash for this project!

SulaBug 01-03-2010 02:27 PM

Ladies!! :D
We are so excited to have so many of you start this project with us. It's going to be so much fun. Remember just because the block is called Sunflower, you don't have to use sunflower fabric. You can use your imagination & come up with your own color combination. After all, this quilt will be for yourself, that is unless you decide to give it away for a gift. So, let's continue having fun & sharing what we come up with!!
Thanks again for joining!!
:D :D :D :D

brookemarie19 01-03-2010 07:07 PM

I think I will be doing this BOM because it looks like it could be easy enough for me to do, and being my first BOM to ever do that is pretty important. Now to just find a color to go with....

wvdek 01-03-2010 10:55 PM

Sulabug,
I tried opening the link to Blue Mtn. and had no success. So I went to Quilted Newsletter and same thing happened.
I can't figure out what is wrong on my end,. Anybody have any ideas? I already made sure Adobe is in properly and also pop-up blockers s ok. What am I missing?

Guess DH will have to check it ot in the morning.

I am so sorry!! Did you try the link that Patrice put in, as an update? If you can get on the Blue Mountain site, it is the January BOM for 2008. Do keep us posted.
Cheryl

Barb M 01-04-2010 12:19 AM

Patric's link didnt work for me either, but i didnt try doing an adobe update yet. But im going to paper piece mine without instructions.

Rina 01-04-2010 03:57 AM

I think I am also going to do this BOM. Never done it before.
Sorry if I sound a bit blond, (I'm a natural) do you a block a month for 12 months and then sew it together for yourself, or do you exchange it with others? What about the coulor scheme? Do you need to stick with sunflowers if the name is sunflowers or do you just do your thing the way you like it. Thanks.

Margie 01-04-2010 05:33 AM

I love this block, wish it could be paper pieced and I would make it.

Margie

brookemarie19 01-04-2010 07:35 AM

Ok, I know I sound way behind on this, but can anyone tell me what the size of the quilt would be if I were to make one of each square or how much bigger would it be if I made two of each square and put it all in one quilt. Thanks so much to whoever can help. Still learning but I'm getting there.

Elisabrat 01-04-2010 08:19 AM

I live in blond moments. The color is whatever colors you chose, the fabric does not have to be a sunflower for this month it can be any type or center this is just what the block is called. And we sew them for ourselves and put them together for ourselves. There are I believe 12 patterns and you can chose to make more of anyone or add your own to the batch you have made. If you only make one I think you would end up with a wall hanging . (3 - 12" wide , 4 -12 " down) Adding borders, sashing etc it can in theory be as large as you want it!

Cyndi H 01-04-2010 08:49 AM

I'll be doing this in what I'm laughingly calling the "manly colors" of browns/tans - I'm making a quilt for my husband but it will take a long time to finish it. I'm doing it sampler-style - each block different. I finished 17 12" blocks in 2009 - and will do the BOM ones here in 2010 plus any others I feel like doing - and maybe, just maybe, I'll have a quilt top some day!

SharonC 01-04-2010 08:50 AM

Cheryl - I've never done a BOM so this will be my first. I have a color scheme in mind (the hard part :)), but I'm not sure if I need to buy enough fabric for the entire quilt. I suppose this is a beginner question, but I was so inspired by your choice for January that I've decided to JUMP IN :)
Also, when are they due? I'll be on vacation 16-24 Jan, will that be a problem?
Thanks
Sharon

Sharon,
So glad to have you join us. They aren't due at any specific time. You can make all of them or just the ones you like the best. As for fabric, I just used pieces that I liked from my stash.
In 2009 I chose to make a Christmas theme quilt & bought my fabric in January when it was on sale. I bought a lot, as I can always use it. And yes, I did have way to much fabric!!:D When making these once a month, when you are finished, you can pick a sashing fabric that will bring them all together. I love to experiment & try out all of the new patterns. It's really fun.
I will be anxious to see what everyone comes up with. Be sure to post your pictures as you get going!!
Thank you,
:D :D :D

SharonC 01-04-2010 05:13 PM

Cheryl - Thanks for such a quick reply...going shopping tomorrow :) (any excuse), I'm looking forward to joining in and having a wonderful quilt at the end of the year. I'm excited about it the blocks done so far are beautiful and I'm sure I'll learn a lot.
Sharon

blahel 01-05-2010 10:26 PM

thanks for such a lovely block! i have never attempted a BOM before but have watched everyone being so creative that i finally decided that i am going to give it a go.
Update..it is now several hours later and after initially getting everything cut out and taking my time to minimise mistakes, i am now busy ripping..i am going to do this and I am not going to let it beat me but think i will go and do a few chores before attempting it again. Wish me luck as i really, really want to do this as i am alreay looking forward to Februarys block!
I just feel so dumb as you ladies crank them out so fast..

Barb M 01-05-2010 10:30 PM

blahel, don't feel dumb at all lol. I'm still trying to crank mine out lol. I don't do triangles lol, unless i have to, so i'm paperpiecing mine :) :) :)

This January block is fun! I spent all afternoon on Monday playing with the colors in my bin of scraps. This BOM quilt will be made from my scraps. I still can't believe it took me all afternoon to do one block but I did cut and sew different colors to come up with this one. So I have other little pieces now for other little things. Here is my January block.
