Do not feel that your house fabric has to look like wood or bricks or aluminum siding. I saw an artist once who literally pulled fabric at random from her stash to make houses. The wall may have had fish, the roof might have been polka dots, and the sky might have had monkeys. Sounds crazy, but it worked.

MommaDorian, this is not a swap. Nobody gives anyone any blocks. You will be keeping the blocks you make and doing whatever you want with them. So make them whatever you want them to be.

When I say 'gives' the block, I mean the pattern given on the 1st of the month. Does everyone do their own thing to make the block 12 1/2"?

say someone choses a 9" block then you would make the 9" block and add a border of your choice to it to bring it up to a 12.5" block.
hope this helps.

This is my first BOM project. Could you explain what it means to 'add' to each one to get 12 1/2"?

TIA

Most of the house blocks that I have found on the internet are any where from 8 to 10''. So by adding to it, I mean to make the finished block measure 12 1/2" when it is completed. Some people will enlarge their patterns to that size & some will use a coordinating fabric to match the block itself. I hope this answer's your question. If not send me a Pm & I will do my best to help you out.

Sharon,
Yes, we will be making one block a month, ending up with 12 blocks by the end of the year. Of course anyone is free to make more if they want a bigger quilt. It's all up to the individual. I am glad to know that you want to join us this year. We are going to have a lot of fun!!

Cindy, I love the fabrics in your avatar! I'm always drawn to reds anyway!

here is a house block I made as part of a wall hanging -- each house had a different quilt block on the wall

I'm gonna try this. I've never done a BOM before. Sounds like fun I'm so glad houses are being done.
