Wow, look great! Love the colors!

Thanks for the nice comments. I saw someone else do their Century Block this way and it does look a whole lot better this way, IMHO. :-) |

Blocks 17 & 18

Your blocks are beautiful, you're sure busy.
|
Thanks, Judy. Not really busy, just had a week of vacation, so used it wisely! :)
|
Really pretty blocks Kathy. Hope to see more of your blocks.
|
I posted blocks 1-38. I now have 39-43 finished. Will post sometime this weekend.

As I was picking out my fabrics for #18, I couldn't help but notice what a nice skull or Cylon that block could make. It is a weird one.  Now this is a STRANGE looking face for a "transformer figure". I think I may have invented a new block. Ripping I will go. Guess I will be ripping again! It's actually kind of cool. This was an ugly block I thought. I like how some of the others changed the piecing. I'm too anal-HAVE to follow directions LOL. You've really been busy-love the colors you're using in this block.
|
That is a pretty strange looking block. Wonder how it would look with a bunch of them in a quilt?
I'm having my own problems with the block I'm working on now. I've done it 3 times now and each time it turns out exactly the same...wrong! |

Here are my blocks just 11 months late!!! I started with this group and only made about 20 blocks. I tried to copy Quilting Nonnie on Cats and Mice, but it didn't work out.

hi Fry, I love the saturated purple/blue in# 17. This block will really stand out amongst all the others. I'm going to redo # 18 I'm not happy with the fabric choice. It will be a pot holder! Anne

Wow Fryguy, I just love your #18 blocks. Spectacular colors!
|
Hurray for us diligent, yet slow moving, FWs! Very, very nice job on your blocks!!
|
keep up the good work  they look amazing!!!

I went to do the Century of Progress one tonight and thought it was weird ... glad to see that I am not alone on it. Was contemplating changing it up, but thought I'd check in and see what everyone did with theirs. So I guess I just might get creative and do something contrary to the norm when I tackle it another day.
Lovely assortment of blocks ... even with Transformers on board! :) |
Elaine, not many people liked that block. I posted mine as the book showed it to be done but I redid it for my quilt. I thought it looked like a "mistake" on the bottom part. Others thought it looked like an angel. I made the bottom the same as the top--balance appeals to Libras LOL.

Hi!
If you look on page 7 of this thread, Darcene did a modification of Century of Progress to make it symmetrical. It looks a lot better. Also scroll down the page and see how she handled the bump in the back. Scroll down further and see another idea for getting rid of the bump in the middle. |

Yes, I did not like the looks of it either, but once in with all the other blocks it is not noticeable. I was not about to re-do it!!! LOL

Here you be ....
#17 Cats and Mice and #18 Century of Progress ..... revised! After all, it's progressed during the century! |
Beautiful.

Wow! I like those a lot--really great contrast. I also like the "new & improved" Century of Progress; that's how I redid mine. I'm too anal for asymetrical blocks. Those fabrics are so pretty.
|
Oh, my, those are beautiful!
|
Ditto for me. QE, you are doing great!
|
QE, block 18 really caught my eye between the two. I will catch up soon or later.
|
Thanks all ... IMHO the Cats and Mice seem too "busy" thanks to the white print, and like OK, I prefer the Century of Progress. Though we do need lots of variation to keep it interesting.
JanRN ... me too, I just couldn't get that original fabric placement. I keep wondering if it was a mistake, as was the black, red and white one, that Laurie acknowledged in the book, and mentioned that she purposely left the colour placement mistake when printing the book. |

Okay I've caught up to this point. Have one more to go and I will have my first 26 + a few others. I enjoyed sewing the Cats and Mice, and kept the colorways as in the book on the Century block. Thanks to having read all the problems everyone had with it I PP'd it (gasp!!!) I still don't enjoy it and haven't ripped the paper out yet! But it did come out fairly precise (sigh)
|
QW ... I'll take your COP as my favourite here ... love how the pink pops from the blues I'm still trying to see why Cats and Mice is called that?
Are you going to set them on point or squared? Century of Progress gets balanced when squared. Knowing I was going to put mine on point, I just couldn't handle it the way it was and needed to bring it back to the balanced symmetrical world! :) Thus the colour switching! |
Yes, the wicked Century of Progress! I had previously done a 12" one for a block swap and the colors turned out beautifully. My COP for FW wasn't nearly as good, *sigh*.
OK, You did a really nice job on your COP. Those two colors are wonderful together. The pink/red really pops, like QE said. The cat and mice is especially beautiful. I love your background color. QE, The names to all these blocks are hard to figure, aren't they? I show my finished blocks to my DH as I finish them. At first he'd just stare at me when I said the name and wonder how they came up with that. Now it's almost like a ritual. He'll look at me wincingly and say suspiciously, "And what is that one called?". When I tell him the name, he says, "I don't know how they came up with that." Then he'll make up a "better" name for it, either jokingly or something akin to what it looks like. |
I think people like your DH are why many of the blocks are known by more than one name.
Some of those are regional differences. And perhaps generational differences, too! Eg. Churn Dash block ... at least it does look like a churn dash! :) Til OKSGlad called it Hole In the Barn Door, I'd never hear that. And yes, it too looks like a HITBD! And for both of us, both names have personal meanings ...... who let the cows out? :) |
