The FWS 30's Quilt-Along Week 17 Block 33 Farmer's Wide & Block 34 Fern

Hi Everyone, It's time to get back in the groove again for the next several weeks. I hope everyone enjoyed their week off...Now it's Eye Candy time..

Thanks, Honchey. I am ready to post this week's blocks. I believe we go for two weeks and break...is that right?
Farmer's wife I thought was a generic name...so is my block...
I thought Fern was a lovely block...so she is exported as a bigger block so you can see the details better and the litter critters in the corners: Sew much fun to make! Now off to do Cinnamon Rolls!

klgreene 12-01-2015 08:44 AM

I am hoping to back back in the groove this week. I'll start with this weeks and work my way backwards to where I left off. So hopefully by next week I'll have a few to show you. Happy sewing. My new sewing room is going to be heavenly to sew in.

QNS, love your blocks. You'll see that red and green floral in some of my blocks, too. These two proved to be easier to put together than I thought they would, even though upon looking at my pictures, I see I could have matched my seams a little better. I followed Givio's lead on Fern and did a little fussy cutting. Now I wish I had more fussy-cutable fabric!

Great blocks, ladies. QNS I love the fern fabric in fern. Katy, your fussy cutting looks so cute! Here are mine; I left off the outside triangles on FW because I thought the block looks like 4 cats.

QuiltingNinaSue 12-01-2015 10:17 AM

Love your blocks, Katybob and JanRN. The purple in the first and yellow brown in the second one Katybob, gives each square some 'character'. JanRN you do use the batiks so well, and yes, I 'see' the cats. I did fussy cutting in Fern and loved showing off the 'ferns' and critters. Ferns tend to collect critters on them. Like a Highlight page can you find all the critters? That might date me a bit, remembering the Highlight pages.

Honchey 12-01-2015 03:42 PM

Pretty blocks this week...and Jan I love your Batman block!!!:D.. My apologies ahead of time but I couldn't resist...

Pam P 12-01-2015 07:28 PM

Lots of cool fabrics in these blocks! I really like the laundry girl fabric Katybob! I will catch up on mine this weekend.

givio 12-01-2015 08:22 PM

QNS, What a fun job you did with Fern-- with ferns!
Katy, that laundry fabric is to die for! Looove it!
JanRN, I thought about leaving off the outer triangles too. Haven't decided what to do with FW. I don't really like the pattern.

Honchey 12-01-2015 08:40 PM

Just a reminder the 15th is the last new thread for this year..We will resume on January 5th, 2016.. I hope to have some blocks done by then..I did most of my Christmas shopping online Black Friday eve. A new experience for me.. I used to like the hustle & bustle of the holiday but I just can't deal with trying to find a space to park my car anymore..
Have a good day tomorrow everyone...H.

oksewglad 12-02-2015 07:51 PM

Oh I forget that everyone can post their new beauties on Tuesday...every one is doing such a great job and kl will be sharing again soon.....

I'm not going to make Farmer's Wife at this point in time. I'm not keen on the pattern. I might change my mind later. Earlier, someone suggested the Broken Dishes pattern and I'm going to substitute that block instead. Here it is.

QuiltingNinaSue 12-05-2015 06:44 PM

Another great block for your quilt, Givio. Getting all your birds in a row..LOL! Love how you do your blocks.

Thanks, Sue! :-) Here's Fern. A little whacky on the cutting-- but done!

janRN 12-06-2015 05:39 AM

Both blocks are great. I like the added touch of the black & white stripes in your substitute block-really adds dimension. Love your fussy cutting in fern.

QuiltingNinaSue 12-06-2015 06:40 AM

That blue and black really borders the fern nicely and makes it pop! Love the way you put your pieces and colors together into a great block, Givio.

givio 12-06-2015 07:43 AM

Aren't we having fun? It's fun to see everyone's blocks and how they use the patterns with their own fabric.
You might like this note I found: "A pdf containing the corrections for The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt can be obtained by sending a request to: [email protected]" You can also request rotary cutting instructions for the blocks of her first FWS book.

Honchey 12-07-2015 05:27 AM

Givio, I created the Rotary Cutting instructions that the first book didn't have...They were posted here on the board with each week's set of blocks..
Someone from the Yahoo group made the pping patterns available on that site which no longer exist? Anne

givio 12-07-2015 08:17 AM

Anne, good job with that! I like rotary cutting. It's such an improvement over a scissors! Mostly I've used the templates so far. Occasionally I like to paperpiece, but with that method more often than not I feel I'm wasting fabric, or if not wasting it, then sewing a mistaken too small seam allowance. I read somewhere that some people are cutting the pieces of the paperpiece patterns out, in order to use the paper pieces for the English paper pieceing method.

Honchey 12-08-2015 08:37 AM

I have also done that..The first block of the Pony club quilt was a horse and I did that one in the Epp way and found that because of the bias the block isn't as stable as if I did it the normal pping way.. It stretched an awful lot..

The picture shows my spray starch, I don't know why, it's dry, that doesn't usually happen. Well, it must wait until the quilt is together for it to be washed.

I always show my husband the blocks I make. He often sees my computer screen. I looked at your posts here on Tuesday, and on Wednesday when I showed him this new block, Flora, he exclaimed, "Oh! Someone else just used that pattern too!" That made me laugh!

givio 12-10-2015 09:18 AM

Whoops! Wrong thread! I'll repost on the correct one.

I thought I was going to get back into the groove the week these were to be made. I got the Farmer's wife done, but never got Fern done, so now I am caught up. Hope to keep on time now.

oksewglad 01-19-2016 08:11 PM

Despite the well constructed blocks...I just can't like the Farmer's Wife...just doesn't look balanced to my eyes...IMHO

Here are Blocks 33 and 34!

QuiltingNinaSue 01-26-2016 05:22 PM

Love the ducks in their row, klgreene. And JearnieG, just love the colors in your blocks posted above. You both are going to have lovely quilts.

givio 01-26-2016 09:00 PM

Jeanie, those primary colors really pop!
You girls did the Farmer's Wife block. Who mentioned it looks like cats? That's all I can see now when I look at it. I still don't want to make it yet. But the more I see it, the more it looks interesting to make... :-)

Here are my Farmer's wife and Fern. Don't know what I did to the outside triangles on Farmer's wife but I did it to all of them.

katybob 02-14-2016 06:35 AM

Love your fabric, Pam. Farmer's Wife is a strange pattern, isn't it? But you were consistent, so it looks great!

givio 02-14-2016 11:20 AM

Pam, perfect sewing, and nice photography! The points look fine smaller!

Pam P 02-14-2016 04:15 PM

Thanks ladies, trying to get caught up. Still have quite a few to do. Can't believe how far behind I got.

I hope I'm getting these on the right thread.

QuiltingNinaSue 04-02-2016 12:44 PM

QrannyQ, you have me wondering if you are paper piecing or just sewing the blocks together...a great job at whatever you are doing.

givio 04-02-2016 01:08 PM

GrannyQ, I've posted on the wrong thread before by mistake. Looks you are doing it right to me, anyway, so nice to see your green blocks!

It was so much fun looking through this thread and seeing everyone's blocks. Even found out QNS and I had used the same print for Farmer's Wife. Ha ha... great minds. I think it may even be the same as the one in the book.

Here are my Farmer's Wife and Fern:

Great blocks SBG!

sewbizgirl 06-26-2016 05:49 AM

Thanks, Jeanie! I'm starting to get excited about putting all these together into a quilt!

JuneBillie 06-26-2016 08:35 AM

SBG such pretty blocks, and so are all of the others. It's just a joy seeing them all.

sewbizgirl 06-26-2016 08:38 AM

Thank you, Susan. I love this pair!
