Your welcome. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me!

QuiltingNinaSue 01-10-2012 02:47 PM

Whew!! I finished block one and two and started on block three....redid block three and redone it the third time before the size was right. The block was not hard; but I had a hard time with myself in getting it right .

It reminded me on a trail ride, riding behind one another, the view in front of you is a north-end of a pony going south. Opposite of the head, you have the tail end, right? You watch your pony's ears, because they tell you if he is going to "act up"; you watch the tail of the pony in front of you, to see if that pony is going to lift his tail and let go..so you can swing your pony around quickly and miss the action. See what you are missing sitting in front of your sewing machine? Those good old days. lol!!!

Great reminiscing QNS! :D:D

QuiltE 01-10-2012 06:21 PM

Oh what a good story, QNSue ... I can't tell horse stories, but could give some cow ones! And certainly know the meanings of the tail going up! Many a time in the barn I've pushed the naive along the walkway to miss an episode! :)

Keep these stories coming ... it's going to make the ride along the way oh so much more fun and interesting!!

As for me and my blocks ... I did A Dandy, and kept to my bargain of not doing A Beauty til I had atleast two more FWS blocks done. I got them done and am now at 94/111. Only problem is that life and work (the paying stuff!) has gotten in the way. So I am hoping to get back soon and get A Beauty done, or at least one of this week's blocks done. My bargain this week is .... I can already do the 2nd block. And I'll allow myself to do the 3rd whenever I choose. However ... the 4th can't be done til I am at least past block #100!

And that's my story ... and I'm sticking to it! :)

You are doing a great bargain. It is working and soon all your FWS blocks will be done. Great way to be motivated with the two.

Thanks ArtEC ... I feared that I might get too involved with PC and could lose my motivation with FWS, so decided I'd have to have some progress goals to keep me on track. Plus not to get sidelined with the two different colorways I'm working with. Aside from the fact all the fabric for both. Soon the FWS fabrics can return to the stash, and some I've already spotted to move into the PC potentials!! Then I'll be away to the races and doing the sashing etc. which will be OK while doing the PC.

QuiltingNinaSue 01-11-2012 08:31 AM

So much for posting my pictures. The system here is rejecting them.

QuiltingNinaSue 01-11-2012 08:44 AM

Alas!! My luck is not good on the computer today and cannot post pictures of my blocks taken by my digtal camera. Will try to scan on dh computer and bring them on a flash drive later. Enjoying everyone else's pictures so much; wish I were a bit smarter today and could bring the photos in. I have done it on the new system, but apparently not today. Sigh.

I would not run the freezer paper thru your laser printer. You are correct it will get too hot and melt the wax. If you have an inkjet that will work fine as it does not use heat to set the ink.

Warmest Regards
Crystal

Welcome to the Quilting Board and the Pony Club!
Yes, DublB confirmed that earlier, as well. Some day I will have an inkjet, but for now, only the laser in my office.

Good evening ladies

I am a brand new quilter. I sewed my 1st quilt top on Christmas break and can't wait to finish it. I had never sewn before this so I am thrilled. My girlfriend and I plan to start this quilt next week. Thanks for this awesome thread.

Quick question what does PP stand for? Is there a place I where all the abbreviations are located?
Thanks for bearing thru all my questions.

Warmest Regards
Crystal

QuiltE 01-11-2012 08:56 PM

PP = Paper Piecing

I'm going to put up a thread in the next few days with an extensive list. I'll try to remember to let you know when I do, but just in case I forget, please watch for it!

Be sure to check all the threads for the PC ... each week there are two, one for the photos, and one for general discussion. A good way to find them is here ...
http://www.quiltingboard.com/sitemap/f-9.html

The first four that are up are items #1, 2, 5 and 6 in that list. If more BOM/BOW threads are started they will shift down. Look for Pony Club in all of the thread titles to find them now and in the future. HOnchey posts the new ones every Tuesday night.

Again, Welcome ... and good luck!

TFWPC QUILT/ BLOCK 1, A beauty/help

Hello All, Well I got all the pieces cut out and have no idea how to put them together. Can anyone explain it or point me in the direction of a tutorial. I know this is the one with the dreaded "Y" seams. Thanks so much!!

TFWPC QUILT/ BLOCK 1, A beauty/help

It's me again. I've never pieced with templates. Do I draw around the template on the right side of the fabric or the wrong side. Thanks!!!!!

janRN 01-12-2012 02:47 PM

Termi, I can't help much with Y-seams; I got mine done half by machine and half by hand. I googled y-seam quilting tutorials on line and followed the instructions as best I could. Still very confused by y-seams.

As for templates, I made my whole FWS quilt and am doing Pony quilt with templates. I trace around the template with a very sharp pencil on the right side of the fabric. This way when some of them call for template A and template AR (reversed) they come out correctly. This is the way I learned to quilt looooong ago, and it worked for me. Good luck!

JeanieG 01-12-2012 03:38 PM

Laurie recommended that you print the templates on card stock. This gives you a better edge to draw around the template. You can cut the template either on the solid line or the slotted line. If you cut the template on the solid line, you need a very accurate 1/4" seam allowance or accurate 1/4" sewing foot. If you cut the template on the slotted line, after you trace around the template you need to ADD a 1/4" seam allowance. In other words you would cut 1/4" from the line you traced. You would then sew on the line you marked (slotted line). I hope that makes sense and helps!

janRN 01-12-2012 06:48 PM

Jeanie, what's the slotted line? I've been printing out the templates, gluing them on old patient file folders and cutting them out on the outer black line that I trace and then cut on. Am I doing something wrong? I'll admit, when I did FWS all my blocks were 1/4" smaller than they were supposed to be; I thought it was my sewing. Now, I think I missed something. I didn't see a slotted line when I printed out Pony Club templates either. Help, Jeanie!! Termi, wait for Jeanie's answer--I may be wrong and if so, I'm sorry!

You are not doing anything wrong Jan. That is the way I do mine too. Saying that, there is a solid line and a slotted/dotted line on each template. However, when I did A Beauty (even though mine did not come out very good), I cut the template on the slotted/dotted line (rather than the solid line), and drew around the template and then cut 1/4" from the drawn line (sewing line). That will give you an actual sewing line to follow. In my first quilting class, we learned to always sew on the line. We did not have 1/4" feet back in the late 70's! LOL I hope I did not confuse too many of you, and maybe someone can explain this better than I tried to do??? Help people!

Termi, it's kind of like follow the picture! ... In the book the assembly of each block is shown. The closer together sections are the first ones you stitch together. Then the next closest and so on ... til the final wide ones are sewn to complete the block. Good Luck!

janRN 01-13-2012 05:32 AM

Thank you, Jeanie. I was having a Senior Blonde Moment I guess LOL. I also started quilting in the 70's and some books even used a 5/8" seam allowance.
I have another question: where are the rotary cutting instructions? The little icon at the bottom of the page shows a rotary cutter but I didn't see the instructions ( or is this another SBM??) Thanks!!

QuiltingNinaSue 01-13-2012 06:08 AM

In the folder from the disk, is the section number 1: getting the most from this disk. Open up that and it has directions. And rotariy inststructions. Assembly of the blocks are listed in the book, I think, it starts on 278 of the pony book. Rotary instructions begin at vi to vii. Very well done book & instructions in the pony book.

TFWPC QUILT/ BLOCK 1, A beauty

HELLO AND THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR HELPING ME FIGURE OUT THIS FIRST BLOCK. I THINK I CAN GET IT NOW. I ALSO FOUND A GREAT VIDEO TUTORIAL ABOUT "Y" SEAMS.

janRN 01-13-2012 06:24 PM

QNS, thank you. I printed the pages out for the rotary cutting. Today was a day full of Senior Blonde Moments for me--oh, it is Friday the 13th!

QuiltingNinaSue 01-13-2012 06:50 PM

Glad it all worked out for you, JanRN. I was a blonde when I was small; turned blonde again on the desert in Southwestern Texas with the help of my hairdresser for a short while. Now it is just senior moments that make me blank out.

QNS - if you need to make your photos smaller I found that with Picasa (a free google program) you can export your file in a smaller size. That is what I have been using.

what book do I need to buy? and where?

QuiltingNinaSue 01-25-2012 06:07 AM

Follow the thread of FWPQ and PQ on QB. Laura Aaron Hird has written the Farmers Wife's Sampler Quilt which we did as a group; now we are following her second book just released last fall: Farmers Wife's Pony Quilt. About the magazine published in 1912? to 1939 that gave children a pony, bridle, and saddle for selling $$$ worth of subscriptions to their magazine. She, I understand sells the book on her blog. Local Quilt Shops also sell it, as does Amazon & probably Connecting Threads.

It contains a CD with the patterns on it. We are all excited about the project, reading the stories about the children, and sharing the blocks each of us make. Honchey is our leader, but has computer problems this week, so OuiltE is leading us this week. You may sent a private message to them for more info or follow the thread on QB. More the merrier on this journey.
