Howdy Pardners, this weeks blocks can be a little trying......I'm trying to get them done sometime this week!!!
I'm having a little problem with my right knee and can't do any flexing of my ankle or any pressure on my foot.. It just hurts too much... I tried to sew but no can do that either. I tried to use the start/stop feature on my machine and I can't stop/start where I need to so what good is it. Oh well..I will be seeing my ortho guy as soon as I can get an appointment...I know what he's going to tell me...the same thing he told me a year ago..."when do you want to schedule the surgery"....I am totally dreading that day. I had the left knee replaced 7 yrs ago and the pain for me was unbearable...my tolerance for pain is "nil".

Here's another letter.

Letters of the Week #8B--Geneva Holt; Frank Harris; Yellowstone County.

This posting should be called "Geneva Holt and Family" since I found
more information about her family than I did about Geneva. What interested me
most about her letter was the three little brothers and two little sisters that
she visited at the cemetery.

George Willey Holt, age 24, married Betty F. Dotson, age 25, on Christmas Eve
1901.

Nine years later in the 1910 census, George and Betty are the parents of four
children: Ione (6); William (5); Geneva (3); and an unnamed baby son who was
less than a year old.

By the next census in 1920, only two children remain, Geneva and the brother
(William) that she mentions in her letter. I can find no record of the death of
her baby brother, but I was able to learn something about Ione. She was born
October 2, 1903 and died on March 23, 1913. The cause of her death was listed as
paralysis. Unfortunately, I can find nothing about the other two brothers and
one sister that Geneva mentions.

And sadly, in the 1930 census, the family only numbers three; siblings Geneva
and William and their father George. Mother, Betty, had died in Ohio on March
1929. Why was she in Ohio? I cannot find any records for father George in West
Virginia or Ohio, but apparently Ohio was brother William's home. He died in the
Cleveland area in 1982 at the age of 77.

What became of Geneva? I don't know. Since I cannot find any death record for
her, all I can assume is that she did marry.

Letters of the Week #8B--Geneva Holt; Frank Harris; Yellowstone Coun Frank Harris' full name is Charles Frank Harris, which makes finding
records of him rather confusing. He was born in March of 1898 in the state of
Washington. His parents were Charles L. and Roxie Irene Harris and he appears to
be their only child.
In the 1910 census Frank and his family were living in Montana where he won his
pony "Trixie."
No records can be found of Frank and his family in the 1920 census. However, in
1923, Frank married a woman named Ramona. In 1930 we find that Frank and Ramona
are living in Los Angeles, California, and they are the parents of three
children; Mona Lee, age 6; R. Dell, age 4; and a one month old baby. These
children could still be alive. Maybe they could be found!

Love these letters and the work that has gone into the research is wonderful.

Hope your knee problems get sorted Honchey, my DH lived with a hip problem for 19 years following a car accident and they finally did his replacement on his 50th birthday, he said it was the best birthday present he could have had no more pain, although almost 8 years later it is starting to niggle again.

QuiltingNinaSue 04-18-2012 04:49 AM

I guess you has to decide which is the worst: replace or not replace. If it would help, you might want to consider it.

Stories of children are interesting; we are born, we live and we die. What we chose to do with each new day of our lives, is a gift. It is a "new" day; not repeat of what we have had...and that is a blessing, I think. I love that saying, "yesterday is history, tomorrow is the future, today is the present, that's why it is called a "gift".

Making quilts, makes memories for us, and for those who love quilts after we die. Doe & dart was not easy for me; then came Elsie's favorite that had 3 tiers or rows..............the first two were fine, but I hope with that third tier, the long arm quilter "can quilt that out" like the song on You-tube! They are done, not perfect, but done. That's my story, and I am sticking to it. Future generations can take up the challenge and do it better. I always marvel at the perfect postings of the blocks on QB, but, sigh, its not mine. I do create color, and stories and enjoy doing the work & the show of everyone's blocks.

deranged_damsel 04-18-2012 06:58 AM

Honchey, heal up and get better!
can you sew left footed??? its worth a try :D

JanieW 04-18-2012 06:59 AM

QNS,

Perfect isn't in the cards for me either, but we try our best. Your blocks have such a vibrancy and array of colours. They are unique. As soon as I see your blocks, I know who made them. I am in awe of your fabrics and how you put them together.

Love your attitude.

Janie

Hi All, I'm going to try sewing left footed later on today. I had the tense? unit on most of the evening and was able to at least sleep during the night...compression stockings on today....I'm looking thru my scraps for Elsie's Favorite...I have Eastertide done so that's one for next week. i will post the thread for the 2nd milestone next week...give everyone time to get this week's blocks done if they want to include them...(like me!).

Honchey ... I too recommend trying the left footed pedal technique. I thought it'd be hard, and just started recently, and was surprised how easily I adapted. I will confess, that I still sometimes hit go with the left, and at the same time use the knee pedal, which of course, only lifts up the foot! I am getting better, and and remembering to use the lift as I sew. Old habits die hard ..... and as you can tell, I learned with an old cabinet Singer with the knee pedal.

QNSue ... ITA that your blocks are so filled with stories, that I am anxious to see them. And truth be known, I am learning from this, and find myself frustrated if I can't find a story fabric for my blocks! As for those stories ... if you're not getting them written down (or computer'd into memory!) ... how about talking them onto tapes?

All ... For me, this quilt is going to be filled with so many personal touches, and that includes each of you! The fabric we've been sending back and forth. The American Flags I sent off, and will gladly send to anyone else who has had 2nd thoughts are another touch. And more, as it comes. I don't have the "family" to heir these too, so it's just between me, and you and my sewing machine!

Speaking of which ..... I found this yesterday for my PC backing .......

With Elsie's favourite .... anyone know anything about the foot mentioned in this thread?
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t186433.html

Is it one for all machines? or specific to a brand/model?

QuiltingNinaSue 04-18-2012 11:41 AM

What cute kittens, quiltE!! Love that. I made two wedding ring quilts, then let this curve throw me off. I may do it again.

I fell in love with the kittens and being the were SO realistic looking, and that the colour was right, I just HAD to have it! Left it on a 48 hour hold while I checked my quantities needed. I'm still toying with QAYG or some variation of such, so knew I needed extra to allow for that .... just phoned to secure it all!!!!!

OK All You Quiltin' Pardners ... ... here's another acquisition from yesterday, that I'm willing to share with one and all!! If you'd like to have some to honour MiraB in your quilt, PM me with your snail addy! Yes, it's Australian flags, complete with some kangaroos hopping along!!!!!!!!

MiraB ... want some? also, USA?
DublB ... hope you will include the other patriots in your quilt!! :)
Anael and ArteEC ... I'm dubious about ever finding your flags, so if by chance you have a smidgeon to share with me, I'd appreciate it. And too, if you'd like the USA?

USA Flag material ... is still available for those who would like some (please see Spring Break thread for a pic)

QuiltE I purchased the Curvemaster at a Craft Fair a few years ago, looked easy as it was being demonstrated but after wasting an obscene amount of fabric trying to piece Drunkards Path blocks I threw it in the trash.
I did contact the local distributor here in Aus and she told me that there was a problem with the Pfaff foot and they would send me another but by that time I really wasn't interested. They are sold with numerous foot attachments for different brands of machines.

You know when you want to sit and sew you don't want to spent all afternoon ripping seams out.

mirabelle 04-18-2012 01:37 PM

That is so funny QuiltE sending Aussie flag fabric from Canada to Australia. The cost of postage is so high I don't want anyone to be out of pocket on my behalf, but I am so humbled that you have offered it to other PC'ers to honour me.

deranged_damsel 04-18-2012 02:17 PM

I see Australia in my near future! we just got done with a visit from Dh's Son and his dear female! it is "officially unofficial" as he has not met her family YET... but they picked a ring!!! and... she is from.... AUSTRALIA!!!

and if THAT weren't exciting enough! she wants babies right away! YAY babies!!! and little baby quilts :D :D :D

QuiltE 04-18-2012 03:52 PM

MiraB ... send me a PM and I'll send you a piece according to the postage. It's not like i"m sending you a couple yard! Size will be according to the postage cost, and I'll be thrilled to keep you in the loop!

DDamsel ... yea for babies for you ... again better PM me your address and you can impress this DIL-to-be when you present her with something Aussie! If you want yardage, I bet I could get you LOTS more! And you can start making the baby-trousseau!

dublb 04-18-2012 05:45 PM

Beautiful fabric QuiltE! I love those kitties & that Aussie flag fabric is awesome!
Derainged - Congradulations on getting a DDIL soon!

QuiltingNinaSue 04-18-2012 05:49 PM

You have the greatest ideas, QuiltE!! I agree with dublb "kitties & that Aussie flag fabric is awesome!"

QuiltE 04-18-2012 08:37 PM

DublB ... I figure this quilt is all about fun, so the backing should be no different!

QNSue ... ideas? I'm only learning from you, my dear! :D

*grumble* *grumble*
I did Elsie's Favourite tonight ... which proved to NOT be QuiltE's favourite and will be a do over block!

Honchey 04-18-2012 09:01 PM

I cut out Elsie's Favorite....pinned then basted then sewed left footed and thought it turned out okay until I measured and found I was 1/4 short on one side. ripped it out and will finish tomorrow...I don't like the way the seams lay. How are all of you pressing them??? I've never had to do seams this way before.

QuiltE 04-19-2012 05:27 AM

Hi Honchey ... yea for the left foot .... did that work OK for you? are you now a convert?

Right or wrong?? all because I know no better on this ... I did opposite sides one direction and the other pair the opposite way. Likewise for the second layer. They didn't seem to care which way they flipped and doing them that way helped to reduce the bulk .... and I didn't think open was any better.

Like I said ... no idea how wrong or right I was ... and look to learn more from the Pro's before I do Vs.2!!! :)

The way mine swung right or wrong

JanieW 04-19-2012 06:31 AM

I used my old 4H method for setting in sleeves to do the curved seams. I stay stitched in the seam line. Then I clipped the curves up to the stay stitching. Then I carefully, to avoid stretching put a million pins in. I had to sew very slowly, as I don't sew over pins, but it worked ok.

Yes, it is hard to avoid stretching. I finally did another block, pinning from center both ways:
Introducing Deputy Dawg.....

Wrong side of DD untrimmed...without forcing the "extra" into the curve..

Trimmed as much as I want right now before slashing is sewn on...it is 8.5 inches square...almost square. Deputy Dawg D. If your block is better, wonderful. Question is do I use the Nightmare EC or DDD ec block???

Yea! for another one with green blood!!!!
Any other 4-H'ers? please step forward and be accounted for!!!

2013 is the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Canada ... special events are starting already!

QNS I love your Deputy Dawg, he is so cute:D

I didn't mean to suggest that my block was better, QuiltingNinaSue. I was just sharing a method that helped me with the curved seams. I did not mean to offend you.

Janie

QuiltingNinaSue 04-20-2012 04:07 PM

JanieW, you did not offend me; I love the fact you shared what worked for you. Confir (?mispelled)and convex curves are hard to configure and these pieces do not work together as good as they could. It is so good that QB people on line share methods with the rest of us. I have learned so much from people generous enough to share here on the QB. Bless you. I even tried it again with Deputy Dawg in the center...not much better result. But your words did encourage me to "try" again. Thanks.

gardnergal970 04-20-2012 06:10 PM

Hey one and all....I've been missing ArteEmCasa...Ivana..so I pm'd her. She had said to me earlier that her brother had cancer so I was afraid that might be the problem again and it is. He recently has had surgery but has not responded as well as they had hoped. They are changing his medication in an effort to help him. She is very close to her brother but lives far enough away she can only talk to him by phone and some days he doesn't care to talk so her DSIL tells her how he is. In Ivana's words, "my heart is broken and hasn't been able to do a stictch". I told her I would tell the PC group because we do care for each other.

dublb 04-20-2012 08:35 PM

Oh no! I'm praying for her, now!

QuiltingNinaSue 04-21-2012 02:49 AM

I had sent her a package and she finally received it; she told me about her brother and I forward the message to QuiltE so she would know the story for we had been emailing our concerns of the missing trail members. So now you all know the story about one missing trail member. I told her that she and our love and prayers from PC members on QB. To read our messages when she felt like it; and make any block she wanted too. To take each hour and day, one at a time. To treasure each moment that she could share with her brother.

Life is not always a bowl of cherries. It is not easy to face the not-so-good facts of life, the way life deals out the troubles. But none of us are alone; we share, we love, and we quilt. And yes, even laughter and joy. We smile and the world smiles back at us. We love the stories about our grand kids and marvel how wonderful they are. Together, we are strong.

mirabelle 04-21-2012 04:03 AM

What a beautiful sentiment QNS, my thoughts and prayers are with you ArtEmCasa. I hope you can draw strength from everyone on the QB who is thinking of you and wrapping you in the warmth of their quilting and friendship

QuiltE 04-21-2012 04:41 AM

QNSue ... Reading your words have brought tears to my eyes! I did receive your message, and haven't gotten back to you. I'm sure your care package gave tears of joy to ArteEC and your words, encouragement.

ArteEC ... when you read this, I want you to go back and re=read QBSue's notes here and her PM ... I don't think I could ever find words that say my thoughts any better. My ♥ is breaking for you ... to be so far from one so close at this difficult time, is indeed difficult. My prayers and love to you.
