The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along Wk 27 Lucky Star & Mother's Delight Discussion Page

Where has the time gone???? Can we really be at 54 blocks for this week??? Returned home this week and finally emptied the car... Now I have to seriously concentrate on getting some blocks done...I picked up some sashing fabric while in NC....I didn't have my blocks with me so I hope it works... I will take some photos later this week. H.

oksewglad 07-10-2012 06:41 PM

Today figured I am 23 blocks behind, but I do have this week's done!! Hope to get some fabric selected tonight. I had a lot of trouble getting the right shaped pieces for Lucky Star and on Mother's Delight what a time to get the right pieces in the right places--even marked the patches. My dyslexia must be showing again.

oksewglad 07-10-2012 06:48 PM

oops double post

QuiltingNinaSue 07-10-2012 06:50 PM

I, too, will try to post later in the week. Although I do not have your good excuse, Anne, for moving from one place to another, life does its getting in the way of the quilting I would like to do. Chickens are moved into the hen house; they did not like the 'bullying' of the ducks and turkeys, and fled back to their A-frame the first night after we had moved them. So we had to make quick plans of another fence to divide the fowl; until then, the chickens are confined to their new hen house. Tomatoes are beginning to need harvesting; dew berries are still a full gallon a day production. Quineas are feathering out and starting to 'roost' on their 'beam' of wood. Potatoes need to be dug, and its an all morning watering time every morning with the drought.

So, come all everyone, show your beautiful 'eye' candy... The chains of love quilt goes to the LA quilters tomorrow!!

It isn't dyslexia...it's the darned mirror image stuff. I don't know how to think in reverse either and had to redo a couple of points. Just glad I caught it when I did.

mirabelle 07-11-2012 07:43 PM

Gardnergal970 you are definitely not alone in the reverse thinking. I just couldn't concentrate and got myself all muddled up and had to do a lot of reverse sewing:D but I made it in the end. We are women we are strong and we will not be defeated by tiny little triangles and those dang set in seams

janRN 07-12-2012 04:35 AM

I have reversed points in my blocks--just noticed them after I posted. I didn't even know what a mirror image is and didn't have problems until the Indian block. Did I change something when printing them? How do I get them back to "normal"? I guess it doesn't really matter--I'm just "slightly" LOL anal and want things going in the right direction. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong or what I may have changed in printing?
Thanks!

carriem 07-12-2012 04:51 AM

Jan--don't feel bad. I have done some of the blocks wrong too...like Captain's Wheel. I haven't looked at this one (to sew it) yet, so hope I remember if not, oh well! I like your block so you didn't "mess up" too bad. :)

QuiltE 07-12-2012 03:13 PM

Mirror Images ... I haven't noticed any way to print them in reverse ... is it my printer? or me?

And ... I haven't really worried about it for the PC blocks I've done, or during the FWS. If I catch it, I do ... if I don't so what? Does it really matter if a block goes East or West in its orientation? I don't think so!

OKSGlad
... I'm way in the outback on these blocks too .... and not looking good for a catch up anytime soon, being that I now have those other projects added!

Inspiration please, my dear Friends! As some of you know, I am working on a "Story of Butter" display. It will have many butter antiques ... churns, cream separators, butter bowls/printers/prints, etc. Well, we've now decided we need some colour, which normally would be potted mums. In this case, that's not realistic, due to the length of the exhibit, potential extreme heat an the obvious water requirements. So enter, quilts! I need to make a couple of table toppers and/or runners that can work into the display for that colour addition.

Please .... show me some of yours for inspiration!

QuiltE here are a few of my tablerunners, I think the blue one was a free pattern download but it was a long time ago. The others are just some I have made up to use up leftover fabrics. I resize blocks to make them smaller depending on where I want to put the tablerunner, make them the length and width I need. Hope this helps

QE you have so much on your plate. Here are 3 runners I made; I fell in love with the floral fabric and used different accent colors in each runner. Mirab has beautiful examples for you. I do like she does--find a block I like and make 3 or 4, border, quilt & bind.

QE--I have made the "braid" table runner like Jan several times. Here is the free pattern I used: http://quiltbug.com/free/table-topper.htm

Also if you are going to be setting stuff on top of/around, this quick and easy table runner would be great to add a little color: http://www.sweethomequiltco.com/user...e%20runner.pdf

I made a couple of these for gifts last Christmas.

QuiltE 07-12-2012 06:17 PM

JanRN ... The three look so different, and yet start with the same fabric. Your quilting on the 2nd one is ever-so wonderful!
MiraB ... What a pretty grouping, each with it's own personality and character.
CarrieM ... you caught part of my dilemma without me mentioning it! I know I need to watch that whatever I decide on does not compete with the items sitting on it. Yours are pretty and effective all at the same time. Thanks for the two links, I did have that french braid pattern out for a look today! Whether I go for total simplicity, or not so bold fabric combos for traditional blocks, I'm not sure yet what will result.

A special THANK YOU to each of you for sharing and helping to get my inspiration juices flowing.

I have been thinking of a Churn Dash pattern, to keep with the theme, though the more I think about and sketch it out, I'm not sure I like it. Hopefully this weekend, I can pet fabric, and start working on something!

So Ladies, one and all ... please keep the inspiration rolling ... I'm just not sure what I will be doing, and look forward to seeing more to help me! Thank you, everyone!

Well there's always using bits of yardage as "table cloths". Turn under the edges and press "hems" in the fabric and secure with a concealed safety pin every now and then. As long as you have more than enough fabric this will work for any size "table" that your display sets on. A sprinkling of garnish (wild grapevines) and a dash of color (faux daisies in a vase or crock) would also add color and texture to the area.

We've considered the silk flower route, but decided not ... if we can't have real, then we'll steer clear! And you know me ... it's GOT to be a quilt, even simply made, not just a piece of fabric! :) Heck, I have a month ... :D

QuiltingNinaSue 07-13-2012 09:17 AM

QuiltE: I have fallen in love with Kona Butter color fabric...you might like it too. I order through Fabric warehouse, etc., that gives me 40% off on the bolt. Just a suggestion....

JeanieG 07-13-2012 01:03 PM

I have been getting the Bella Solids by Moda from Missouri Star Company. They are usually $7.00 a yard but are on sale right now for $5.95. I love the butter color also! Whenever I order from them, I usually add a few yards of the Bella Solid colors to add to my stash. Reasonable shipping - $5.00 rate.

QuiltE 07-13-2012 01:09 PM

JeanieG and QNSue ... I'll have to look for your butters when I'm out and about for the Shop Hop. Honestly, I don't know what solids any of our stores carry ... I've always just seen them as solids and never been aware of the fabric line. I have some prints here with butter backgrounds. And I guess, the PC background is close to butter too. I don't think it;s the dairy farmer in me ... I just like the colour. And in two different homes had bedrooms that colour. This time not .... that'd be ....yet!

gardnergal970 07-14-2012 05:05 AM

Thinking back to the churning days, have you considered using kitchen toweling? I remember the ones with the red/blue strips on the sides and then there were the sacking ones with the days of the week embroidered in the corners when we had company. Every farm wife wore the cover up apron to keep her work dress clean. Here is a link I found where they have that fabric. http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php...ge&pageid=3838. While the quilt would also fit the era, toweling, etc would fit the activity a little better in my mind.

QuiltE 07-14-2012 05:45 AM

Good idea GGal -- Thanks!!... hhmmmmm? wonder where I could get the towelling? and if not towelling, maybe gingham would be one to consider. Though that'd be another, where do I get it?

As for the towels ... I'm not from the churning era, but I did embroider several sets of those towels with days of the week and other sayings. Still have one embroidered set unused that I might re-make into a quilt some day. And also a set that I did with the liquid embroidery tubes. Anyone remember those?

You've got me thinking!

The link I included had the toweling. This site sells all kinds of fabric so I would expect that they have gingham. I've purchased from them before with satisfactory results. Actually I've seen it here in the states at Joanne's.

Thanks
GGal ... though I'm not a great one for online ordering. I still have this hangup of liking to do the touchy-feely thing when I'm selecting fabric! There's a couple of stores here where I expect I can get it. PLus I live near Mennonite/Amish communities, so chances are I would get it in their home shops.

gardnergal970 07-14-2012 04:10 PM

Hey, that's a great idea. I love going to an Amish store. I don't order on line as a rule for the very same reason but once in awhile it has served me well.

mirabelle 07-14-2012 05:53 PM

there is nothing like a little help from my friends

QuiltE 07-14-2012 08:51 PM

MiraB ... and I have gained so many friends here! Bless you and all!

GGal ... My handquilted quilts have been done by an Amish lady. You should have Amish not far off from you, as well, I suspect? The nearest for me are only about 1/2 hour away.

dublb 07-16-2012 06:56 PM

OH no!!! I forgot ta go & git these 2 threads! I guess I was so busy thinkin' about the trip ta Brady! I love the toweling site! Hmmmm, I'm thinkin' about makin' valances for the kitchen in Brady outa some o' 'em.
QE - I love the idea o' usein those embroidery pieces for your display, or the churn dash blocks.... lots 'o ideas!
(Note ta self don't forget ta go & git this weeks threads!)

QuiltE 07-17-2012 08:53 AM

QuiltingNinaSue 07-20-2012 03:42 AM

Yep: Here lies a Cowboy Not Very Wise; He chose too many wives, his own size; except they were wiser than he....took all his money & things and left him the shotgun, whiskey and hound, you see.

He killed the hound and then shot himself after drinking all the whiskey...

dublb 07-20-2012 09:37 AM

:D:D:D I needed a good laugh ! Thanks Ya'll!!!!!!
