The FWS Pony Club Quilt-Along Wk 42 Sunshine & Trail/Covered Wagon Discussion Page

Hi Everyone, I am in De and making the rounds of all my favorite places...No blocks so far but will have them done before the end of the week...

QuiltingNinaSue 10-23-2012 06:18 PM

Good, that will nice to look forward too. Enjoy your time with your sister; do some special sister things together...build more special memories. One cannot get too many good memories in life.

JeanieG 10-23-2012 07:23 PM

I'm confused (what else is new) - I thought the block Telephone was with Sunshine??? I have Trail/Covered Wagon for next week.

QuiltingNinaSue 10-24-2012 03:54 AM

Since I have both done, I am not concerned; whatever this week and show the other next week. Since the blocks aren't in ABC order (believe the author said they were on interview with Nancy) we are winners either way 'cause we do get to see the finished blocks, this week or next.

QuiltE 10-24-2012 06:57 AM

Honchey ... got your hair clipped yet? Have a great time with your Sis!

JeanieG ... I'll be glad to see whatever you make! :D

QNSue ... I always like how you keep taking us down memory while staying grounded in the present as we look ahead to the future ALL at the same time!

That's also what I have, Jeanie. Covered wagon and Virginia next week. I have to take my pics and post them but the weather is so nice yard work is in order for this afternoon. Not too many days like this left this year.
Honchey...I agree with QNSue. Make as many good memories as you can. This is the only day that we know we have for sure.

You have your defence now! :)
All that matters is that you are having a great week with your Sis! :)

Honchey

Im AMAZED that this is your first goof! if I was in charge..... OH MY!!!

thanks for a job well done :D :D :D

QuiltingNinaSue 10-25-2012 04:19 AM

QuiltE, my phone was a dark blue, not black...spiders and their webs were black. Yes, I do remember the old black wall hanging phones that you had to ring by rotating a small handle on the side to get the 'operator' to answer you to connect with your party, but there was eight to ten others on the party line also, so you had to listen to see if anyone was using the line, before ringing the operator to put your call through. Some busy bodied persons listened all the time, so they could gossip about your business, but in the case of emergency and needing help, they came through with flying colors to organize help and send it right away to your doorstep.

My gm worked one day as an 'operator'...a lady called her to be connected with the 'doctor'....so she rang up the doctor's and his wife answered the phone...the lady was his secret girlfriend...and the secret was out, and gm got fired for putting the lady through. Then she tired to be a postal clerk and was too short to reach as high as they had too then.

Honchey 10-25-2012 09:03 PM

Hi, I'm back home now...my haircut is very nice....I'm tired from the drive...have to unpack the car tomorrow morning...will be going to the store to pick up some"brooklyn lanterns" the ones advertised on tv...We might lose electric over the weekend because of the upcoming storm and don't want to be without lights at night...Hubby will be bringing in some wood to warm the house if we need to...My sister cancelled her trip to Florida...she needs to be home ..she lives close to the water and her basement needs the pumps going if it floods. This storm is supposed to be a whopper! they are calling it "Frankenstorm" & the "Perfect Storm" I wish I had a handcrank for my Singer 66 machine..then I could sew....

I remember the pay phones that only took a nickle to make a call...anyone remember the first phone number you had when you were a kid??? I know we had the phones to match whatever color the kitchen was painted...that's where the phone was and it had a 25 foot cord that always got tangled...gosh, that was eons ago...

mirabelle 10-26-2012 04:30 AM

Honchey stay safe and hope the storm doesn't do much damage.

gardnergal970 10-26-2012 10:58 AM

Honchey, I second Mirabelle's thoughts. I've been watching the weather channel and it sure doesn't sound good. My first phone number was 4 shorts but I was too short to answer the phone since it was the old wooden box attached on the wall. Even after our system was updated it was still a party line and Mom wouldn't let us use it like kids do today. It was only for necessary or emergency communications. I still don't spend a lot of time talking on the phone.
JanR...will the winds affect you? They're showing such a large area.

JeanieG 10-26-2012 11:51 AM

GG - your remarks remind me of my dad! He did not like us kids to talk on the phone - he said the same thing - it was for necessary or emergency communications, not chit-chat! We had one phone, and it was on the kitchen wall. My how times have changed! Now everyone has a phone in his/her pocket, and many do not have a land line!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-26-2012 12:21 PM

So true, JeanieG; our landline is just so we can fax papers to business or insurance companies. No phone hooked up it it, so when the marketeers or survey persons call, it will ring twice and go to the fax directly. If get too wise that way, I will remove the papers from the tray.

Honchey, do take care. Go to emergency shelters, if they recommend it. Rain continues all around us, but not here.

QuiltE, the turkeys are indeed grown up, the hens each weight more than 15 pounds, and the Toms will all top the scales from 28 to 35 pounds. Pullets are beginning to lay, which means we are getting the tiny little brown eggs... and once in a while a large one. But top for one day has been 7 out of the 23 pullets...mostly its about four eggs a day.

I was at the right place yesterday, to be blessed with fresh tomatoes...FREE...canned 14 quarts today and have a bunch in the refrigerator ... and in the Island sink the latter will ripen there. Also shared the blessings with a couple of families. Beautiful tomatoes. Our roses are still blooming strong, but tonight it is to drop to 25. Had picked up fryers yesterday for 79 cents a pound, so chose three over 6 pounds each that are in the freezer today. Dh is lamenting the freezer will not reduce itself to hold a turkey or two unless I stop buying. They will can just fine.

janRN 10-26-2012 01:48 PM

Everyone please stay safe. They're predicting high winds and 2-4" of rain for us. We're so far inland that I didn't think we'd be affected. It was 82* here yesterday, 75 today and dropping to 40 starting tomorrow. They say about western Pa if you don't like today's weather, wait til tomorrow. I did hear that 4 letter word (snow) as a possibility for Tuesday-yuck!!
Ggal, I tried your 2 quilt idea for PC using horsey prints in one and the rest of the blocks in the other. Didn't have enough to divide that way. I'm still playing around with blocks and how to arrange them. I made some 4" blocks to use as cornerstones in the borders. I liked how the quilt you showed had cornerstones in the borders, really added a lot of interest. Thanks for that suggestion!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-27-2012 06:59 AM

Help experienced PCers, my gs wildlife quilt done with a 3 1/2 inch center and three strips (one and half inches wide) sewn like log cabin around them, five blocks across and five down is not square!! its off by an inch in the top to bottom measurement. Never had that happen before. Have put a dark border around them 3 inches wide, can I square up using that three border? It measures the same in the width, so its just in the length that I got off somehow. I did show a photo of it earlier in one of our discussion threads of PC.

Honchey 10-27-2012 08:07 AM

Hi QNS...If you are plus 1/2" I would ease in that 1/2"...after it's been quilted you won't noitice it...

I have my lanterns...We've been very lucky..we're 20 miles inland and haven't been flooded in 44 yrs that we're here...Our concern are the trees..My home is surrounded on 3 sides with very tall oaks and depending on the gusts of winds I don't want them landing on the house...I have propane gas for cooking so If we lose electric I can still cook by lantern lite... need to fill up cartons to freeze for a few coolers for milk, etc. If you don't hear from me it's because of no electric/internet. one of you can fill in for me. will stay in touch .

Carriem,,,you have to change your handle to Speedy :)

gardnergal970 10-27-2012 08:27 AM

QNSue...just for clarification...are you measuring the two sides of the length and one side measures 1 inch shorter than the other? Is the quilt supposed to be square? Looking at the size of the strips which would finish at an inch, did one block not get that final strip sewn on? If you do decide to square up with the border, I would suggest adding 1/2 inch to both top and bottom and the eye will be less likely to catch the adjustment. BTW...if you're still coming across new situations when quilting, you're a youngin' ready to learn new stuff. Good luck with the quilt!

QuiltingNinaSue 10-27-2012 08:44 AM

The quilt measures 42" on one side down (length), 43" on the other side (length)..its the center of the quilt. I will be adding to sides, top and bottom to complete it. Think I read somewhere to measure from the center out each time; as I am not done adding to sides and top & bottom, maybe I can adjust from center out on top and bottom...thanks everyone for your help.

Have my fingers crossed for you Honchey...may the trees stay upright, and power, if it goes off, comes back on within 6 to 12 hours.

QuiltE 10-28-2012 07:05 PM

Batten the Hatches!! .. Frankenstorm Sandy is on its way!
It's looking like you, Honchey will get the worse of it. Stay Safe!
With JanRN and myself as possibilities too.
For now, looks like LOTS of rain and winds here ... but probably and hopefully nothing too damaging.

I'm still smiling at the phone memories!
When the old wooden phones were taken out of our home, they were put into our "playhouse" which was an old car garage that was too small for the "modern" cars. It stored the generator on a small trailer, and then we had play area around with a phone at each end for us to play with. Oh how I'd love to have one of those now.

QNSue ... I think your DH has it ... you've really got to stop putting things in the freezer ... or have one big party with the neighbours to eat some of it up! :) Or else ... time for an extra freezer! Lucky you to fall heir to those tomatoes!
