The FWS Pony Club Quit-Alone Wk 33 North Star & New York Discussion Page
Lots Of chatter this week ... My North Star is backwards and I might redo it.. I hope you like my New York block...I thought long and hard about using the red fabric I chose for it...It was rather tedious trying to pick out the phrases and whether they were appropiate for the "flag"... I have a request that I will be PMing to you all..
Now for a little light reading... Week 20 Lee Mohr, Marshall County, Iowa Block--Cat's Paw As some of you suspected, I could not find any positive information about Lee. I found two "Lee Mohr's" but both were from the eastern side of Iowa. Since Marshall County is in the central part of the state, I didn't want to guess. I'm still going to work on it though, and I hope to find the correct one in time. *********************** Week 21 Edwin Koberstein, Goodhue County, Minnesota Block--Children's Delight Edwin H. Koberstein was born on June 2, 1904, in Goodhue, Minnesota. His father, George was born in the neighboring state of Wisconsin, and his mother, Emelia Voge, was born in Germany. Edwin was their only son and middle child. Edwin mentions both of his sisters in his letter; Marie was two years older, and Pearl was six years younger. Edwin married Eunice Babcock in 1948. Although he married late in life, they still had three children together; Ronald Edwin (b. 1950); Sandra Marie (b. 1952); and Julie Emelia (b. 1956). Edwin never moved far from home and died in 1972 in a neighboring county. His wife, Emelia, married again and her second husband died in 2007. I do not know if she is still alive. I was able to speak to Edwin's daughter, Sandra, last night. I think that I surprised her, and I'm afraid that she might have been leary of me. I can't blame her. I knew an awful lot about her family! I will be corresponding with her in the future, though. She said that her Dad never talked about winning "Inez." The family only knew about it after his death when they were going through his belongings. They found a postcard with a picture of Edwin, his sisters and "Inez." I have seen a few of these postcards before. It appears that the magazine gave these to the children and they could either keep them or send them to friends and family. The picture on it is different than the one that is included in the book, since Edwin is alone in that one. In the census records, I found a picture of Edwin when he was quite little. I will ask Karlene to post that later today. The 1940 census will be released soon and I hope to find other children and grandchildren of The Lucky Pony Winners. Added Feb 26, 2012 I was able to email Edwin's daughter again. She said some very interesting things, but I want to get her permission before I share them. I am hoping that she sends me a picture of Edwin when he is older, too. **************** Week 22 Ernest L. Heckert, York County, Pennsylvania Block--County Fair Feb 27 I have rather sparse information about our Lucky Pony Winner this week. Ernest L. Heckert was born in Spring Garden, Pennsylvania, on September 15, 1907. He was the only child of Edward and Maria Heckert. Both of his parents were also born in Pennsylvania. Ernest died on June 14, 1997, in New Jersey, just short of his 90th birthday. It's not much, but it is better than nothing! ****************************** |

Currently working on this weeks blocks-Surprise! Anyway that North Star is not as easy as it looks. Mostly because one must allow enough fabric for the star points. The angle that they are sewn to the center square is odd--not 45 degrees. I have found I should cut at least a 3 1/2inch strip to get proper coverage. Hope to post these tonight. Good luck all. |
Lovely blocks, Anne. So perfect. Mine are cut out, maybe by Thursday I can get them posted...but no promises. See how life shapes up here. Nice story you have passed on for this week...genealogy work is not an easy thing to do. It is rather fascinating that the winners & their families can be traced into currant times.

North Star is a bugger! I started sewing on those outside pieces, and they really came out wonky. They attached to the star part ok, but two of the opposite corner triangles are off big time! I think I'm going to take them apart and try again. UGH

Jeanie, I treated it like a Y block. First sewed the straight edge of the square to its corresponding outer part leaving that 1/4" seam allowance at the "corner" unsewn. Then stitched the "ends" of that total seam. Is that clear? Still not a perfect corner for me, but good enough.

I laid my background fabric on the paper and drew a line where the seam went and then added the seam allowance. I only did this after unpicking it three times. It takes me a little while to learn from my mistakes :p Yes it was an odd angle not 45 and not 60 degrees, but I did cut my strips 3 1/2 inches like you did Oksew
Now to cook dinner DS is coming over. |
I did not PP this block. I was using templates. I have it unsewn now, will try again tomorrow. Maybe better PP it, huh???

Yes Karen, I sewed that first star point at least 3 times too. That's my re do limit. So after these were sewn I decided it was time for my Rip it block! My little frog is a woodland frog--jumping in and around the grassy banks of a near by creek.[ATTACH=CONFIG]357193[/ATTACH]

You are on a roll Oksewglad...humming along on the sewing machine. Great blocks. Off to the kitchen with me to fix lunch to take to dh Aunt Ruth today. Love all the squares. Need to find time to sew a bit and catch up again.

I didn't have a problem with North Star---I substituted LOL!! OK love the frog-it really turned out cute. |
