Hi Everyone, This week is a much anticipated milestone for those of you at the halfway point. Blocks 45 & 46 seem to be on the easy side to piece..I just don't like the idea of the inside corner points in Home Treasures .... I'm almost done with Ice Cream Bowl. I'm naming it Baskin Robbins 38 flavors....You'll understand why when you see it....
I'll be posting the thread for the Half way milestone next week..this way you'll have a few more days to get them done...
Here are a few letters...I neglected to add them the last 2 weeks....H.

Letter # 12 Dorothy Biebighauser, Washington County, Minnesota
Block Indian on Horseback

Dorothy F. Biebighauser was born on September 26, 1901, in Washington County,
Minnesota. Her parents were named George (b. 1874) and Adaline (b. 1875.) Some
of the family's census records were poorly written. Her sibling, two years
younger, was named Corrine (a girl) in the 1910 census, or Corwin (a boy) in the
1920 census. Her letter and photograph on page 27 clears up the mystery. Her
sibling was a boy, most likely named Corwin. Dorothy also had a baby sister,
Florence, (not pictured)who was one year old when "Freckles" the pony joined the
family. Dorothy died on December 6, 1987, just a few miles from where she was
born. Her last name did not change, so it is quite likely that she ever married.


Letter # 13 Avery & Orie Knight, Chickasaw County, Iowa
Block Boy's Playmate

I was very surprised to find out that Avery and Orie Wright were not twins. In
fact they were more than two years apart in age. Avery was born on June 24,
1900, and Orie was born on September 24, 1902. In the 1920 census, their
parents, William and Carrie are 49 and 47 years of age respectively. They were
also the parents of ten children ages 3-22. And if that isn't interesting
enough, they were all boys! While I was feeling sorry for Mother Carrie who had
no female help in the house, I checked the 1910 census. Avery and Orie's parents
were actually the parents of 13 children, but by 1920 the three eldest had moved
out of the family's home. The oldest was a boy, and the second and third
children were girls for a total of eleven sons and two daughters. Avery and Orie
were middle children, sixth and seventh in line.

I can find no records of Avery after the 1920 census when he was 20 years old,
but I did find a death record for Orie. He died while living in Sun City,
Arizona, in 1981 at the age of 79.

I did Home Treasure and substituted Ice Cream Bowl with Gladie's Mariner's Compass. I counted blocks today and am at 28...not quite 45, but I am getting there. I have fabrics cut for 7 more blocks and papers cut/measured for all the others up to the current ones. I feel pretty good about my current progress. As long as my headaches and backaches don't slow me down I should be able to keep catching up...or at least not get any further behind!

Carrie, There's no rush...I'm behind quite a few blocks and will get them done when I can...We all know about aches and pains...show what you have...I am...

No blocks for me this week, maybe later. ..too many 'cookies' and garden things to do. Off to help dh move the duck, turkey, and chicken tractors.

Finished my blocks for this week early so spent a whole day sorting my blocks and sewing the sashing strips on. I now have my blocks pinned together in their respective rows. I hope I have enough fabric for the next 44 blocks:eek: I have also started next weeks blocks I am not going to do the pony blocks as it just won't fit my fabric so I hope you like the block I have substituted.

The next few weeks may be a little hectic for me so heres hoping I can keep up, (will be moving my DS into his new home)

I'm so excited and have to share with you all. I'm going on a FART today! This is the first time my friend & I (whose mother is also in a nursing home) have a day to ourselves. We haven't gotten together since March, my Discover card balance is "0" so look out fabric shops LOL. (Of course, I feel guilty but I'll get over it). I think I know what I want to use for sashing so hope to be able to share it with you tonite.
I'm anxious to see if anyone pieced Ice Cream Bowl with templates rather than paper piecing. If so, I bow to you!

Anne found almost the same recipe on internet; yep, that figures with the modern age of technology. Thanks, Anne. Everyone enjoy being a 'cookie monster'...I would bake on Sunday morning, 110 cookies and son would have eaten everyone of them by Wednesday every week when he was a teenager....along with 3 gallon of milk.

If I skipped anyone's request, please let me know. I think I ended up planting the same tire twice with beans yesterday...so it will be a salad of green and yellow beans. Also planted the Horticulture pole beans and Derby Beans, which the last is a new variety they tell me. Planted turnips, too. Peel those, cut up like potatoes and combine them with potatoes (half and half) when almost done, add a bit of milk(cream,if desired) ,1/4 c. of sugar. a bit of butter and enjoy.

OkSewGlad--what a fun project. I really like some of those blocks.

I get to sew this afternoon and have a friend come over. Then tonight I am having dinner with some other friends and going to "card club" (making greeting cards, not playing a card game). It will be a fun day!!

OKSewGlad...did I understand correctly that you will have a house full of kids beginning this next weekend? If so you have my vote for Grandma of the Year. That to me is more challenging than the beautiful table topper that you've created, even if it is PP! Sounds like you'll be doing a lot of cooking to keep their hollow leg's full if they are typical teenagers.

Oh, what fun you are having with 'death by chocolate' and having all your kids and grandkids there this weekend!! Lovely pp top you have designed and the colors are wonderful. I miss all the family get togethers' we had as kids; most was Grandmother's family and all of them lay into their eternal resting places. Younger generation hardly knows one another. I could not recognize or name cousins. Even brother kept his children, grandchildren away from us, never wanted us to know them, which is sad. His reason was: we were not religious enough for him. Love hearing how QB families do get together and have fun. Blessed are thee.

(Buffalo chips) Cow Patty


1 pound of butter, 2 c brown sugar, 2 c. white sugar, 4 eggs, well beaten, 2 teaspoons of vanilla....cream together. Dry ingredients: 4 c flour, 2 c Quaker oats, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 c pecans, 3 c post toasties (or corn ) 1 c coconut flakes, 1 package each of butterscotch, chocolate and white chips. Mix chips into the flour then combine all together and chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before baking at 360 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. Beware, they will spread and rise, so stay well away from the edge of the cookie sheet and do not crowd the cookies on the sheet. Make even balls equally spaced apart. If you use less butter (1 c or 2 sticks, not 4), the cookies will retain their shape better. I have served them at school, to the neighbors, and to friends and family. I refer to them as "cow piles". If you use the whole pound of butter, take the cookies off of the cookie sheet while they are still hot, lightly brown on top ot medium brown on top, even though it acts like unbaked cookie dough...the cookies will not be uniform in shape. I always "land" my cookies on wax paper on the counter 'cause it saves on clean up time. Personally, I like to add golden raisins and cranberry dry fruit to the batter for more color and texture. Warning: yields many cookies...for a TEXAS crowd...I baked my last ones in two different sessions, but they freeze well. The nuts can be omitted or substituted. This is not word for word what the recipe says, so its not copied per se.

Ok, now you can adapt, change it to suit you all just like the quilt blocks. ..just remember its what a cow eats that shows up in the patty.... have fun.

Thank you, QNS for the recipe. How am I going to explain that I gained weight while making a quilt?? Between the cookie recipe and the Ice Cream Bowl block all I've done is eat sweets this week. I'm blaming all of you!!!

JanRN, when you gain weight, it give people more to hug & love...until they give you hugs on the installment plan. That's when they hug and mark their place, then go on around to hug again and again. lol!!:o

QNS you make me laugh with your wonderful stories, love the instalment plan for hugs:D I am out of sorts at the moment, I took a tumble in my sewing room, got my leg caught up in the sewing machine cord. Well I hit the floor and the machine followed me:thumbdown: It has to go to the technician to be checked out but unfortunately that won't happend for another week. So I thought I would set up my embroidery machine as a straigh sewer but the feed dogs have seized so no straight sewing there. In desperation (I am not kidding) I dragged out my Janome 6000 which was puchased in January 1986, dusted it off, oiled it, told I I still loved it;) and started sewing, but it is just not he same as my newer machine. My sewing room looks like a Pfaff graveyard at the moment and I'm not a happy camper. Maybe this is someone telling me that I need to sit and finish my Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt

Karen--sorry to hear of your tumble in the sewing room! I hope you can find something to work on until your machine is fixed. What a bummer that nothing was working right! Some days are like that unfortunately.

I didn't get any sewing in today. Maybe tomorrow afternoon...

Thank you everyone for your concerns, I am fine just a very sore knee. The machine didn't hit me thank goodness, just met the floor rather violently.
My embroidery machine will still embroidery so I started a new quilt today, embriodered rose blocks with fussy cut fans in the corners, looking good so far.
Nearly dinner time and my DS is cooking tonight, part of his cooking lessons in preparation of his living on his own, now if I can only get him to do the dishes:D

MMM....there are dish washers, Mirabelle. DS first wife called me up to ask "What kind of a dishwasher do you have that you don't have to rinse the dishes first?" Apparently, he always skipped that step.lol!!:o

Glad to hear you are OK; machines are replaceable...

Thanks NinaSue, the machines are still under warranty so that's good AND he did the dishes. Sad to say I have never owned a dishwasher, but I don't mind. When our children were younger and DH and I were both working long hours it was always our time when cleaning up the kitchen to chat about our day. It is something we still do today when he is home. We have renovated 2 homes and always made room for a dishwasher just never got around to putting one in ourselves, guess we always enjoyed our chat time.

Thanks alot, QE for mentioning me and "muffin top" in the same post!!!!! The abbreviated FART was successful-I found the fabric I was looking for so I can start cutting sashing strips. I'm expecting my sashing to cover a multitude of "sins"-I've found a few blocks that are almost 1/4" too small. I'm hoping I can cheat a little by using a slightly adjusted sashing on those blocks. I'll try to get some sashing cut and post a pic with a few blocks; it's still in the bag in the sewing room. We had to cut the trip short because of an issue with my friend's mom at her nursing home and my mother is also having new problems so I haven't even unpacked my goodies from the FART.
QE did you finish your collage project? If you did and posted a pic I missed it.

It's easy to "frame" the block with another fabric before you add the sashing and you don't have to worry about matching the sashing. I'm looking forward to seeing your color choice. I hope your DM's new problems can be resolved quickly so you can enjoy your FART finds.

Thanks, Ggal, for the suggestion about additional framing. I made a substitute block and miscalculated--it finished at 8" so I'm going to try a frame before I relegate it to The Box That Will Never be Opened.
