The FWS Pony Club week 23 Home Treasure & Ice Cream Bowl Discussion Page

Hi Everyone, This week is a much anticipated milestone for those of you at the halfway point. Blocks 45 & 46 seem to be on the easy side to piece..I just don't like the idea of the inside corner points in Home Treasures .... I'm almost done with Ice Cream Bowl. I'm naming it Baskin Robbins 38 flavors....You'll understand why when you see it....
I'll be posting the thread for the Half way milestone next week..this way you'll have a few more days to get them done...
Here are a few letters...I neglected to add them the last 2 weeks....H.

Letter # 12 Dorothy Biebighauser, Washington County, Minnesota
Block Indian on Horseback

Dorothy F. Biebighauser was born on September 26, 1901, in Washington County,
Minnesota. Her parents were named George (b. 1874) and Adaline (b. 1875.) Some
of the family's census records were poorly written. Her sibling, two years
younger, was named Corrine (a girl) in the 1910 census, or Corwin (a boy) in the
1920 census. Her letter and photograph on page 27 clears up the mystery. Her
sibling was a boy, most likely named Corwin. Dorothy also had a baby sister,
Florence, (not pictured)who was one year old when "Freckles" the pony joined the
family. Dorothy died on December 6, 1987, just a few miles from where she was
born. Her last name did not change, so it is quite likely that she ever married.

Letter # 13 Avery & Orie Knight, Chickasaw County, Iowa
Block Boy's Playmate

I was very surprised to find out that Avery and Orie Wright were not twins. In
fact they were more than two years apart in age. Avery was born on June 24,
1900, and Orie was born on September 24, 1902. In the 1920 census, their
parents, William and Carrie are 49 and 47 years of age respectively. They were
also the parents of ten children ages 3-22. And if that isn't interesting
enough, they were all boys! While I was feeling sorry for Mother Carrie who had
no female help in the house, I checked the 1910 census. Avery and Orie's parents
were actually the parents of 13 children, but by 1920 the three eldest had moved
out of the family's home. The oldest was a boy, and the second and third
children were girls for a total of eleven sons and two daughters. Avery and Orie
were middle children, sixth and seventh in line.

I can find no records of Avery after the 1920 census when he was 20 years old,
but I did find a death record for Orie. He died while living in Sun City,
Arizona, in 1981 at the age of 79.

I did Home Treasure and substituted Ice Cream Bowl with Gladie's Mariner's Compass. I counted blocks today and am at 28...not quite 45, but I am getting there. I have fabrics cut for 7 more blocks and papers cut/measured for all the others up to the current ones. I feel pretty good about my current progress. As long as my headaches and backaches don't slow me down I should be able to keep catching up...or at least not get any further behind!

Carrie

Honchey 06-12-2012 07:11 PM

Carrie, There's no rush...I'm behind quite a few blocks and will get them done when I can...We all know about aches and pains...show what you have...I am...

QuiltingNinaSue 06-13-2012 03:58 AM

No blocks for me this week, maybe later. ..too many 'cookies' and garden things to do. Off to help dh move the duck, turkey, and chicken tractors.

QuiltE 06-13-2012 04:07 AM

Thanks for the story letters Honchey ... I'm not going to read them now, but later when I have a bit more time to take them in. It's so good to see you back with us and sounds like perhaps you have more of your joie de vie too!

I've been MIA somewhat lately too, and getting behind on my blocks. The milestone markers are a good help to nudge me into action, so I don't get too far behind ........... then yesterday, another project resurfaced and into the priority mode. UGH! Oh well, it's one I need breaks from at times, so those breaks aka rewards just might be a block here and there! :D

mirabelle 06-13-2012 04:20 AM

Finished my blocks for this week early so spent a whole day sorting my blocks and sewing the sashing strips on. I now have my blocks pinned together in their respective rows. I hope I have enough fabric for the next 44 blocks:eek: I have also started next weeks blocks I am not going to do the pony blocks as it just won't fit my fabric so I hope you like the block I have substituted.

The next few weeks may be a little hectic for me so heres hoping I can keep up, (will be moving my DS into his new home)

janRN 06-13-2012 04:24 AM

Thanks Anne for all the info you share with us and for keeping us in line. Halfway??? Wow!
I'm so excited and have to share with you all. I'm going on a FART today! This is the first time my friend & I (whose mother is also in a nursing home) have a day to ourselves. We haven't gotten together since March, my Discover card balance is "0" so look out fabric shops LOL. (Of course, I feel guilty but I'll get over it). I think I know what I want to use for sashing so hope to be able to share it with you tonite.
I'm anxious to see if anyone pieced Ice Cream Bowl with templates rather than paper piecing. If so, I bow to you!
I'm off!!!

QuiltE 06-13-2012 04:35 AM

MiraB ... I'm sure you win the prize for having the first 45 all done!!! I can't wait to see your milestone grouping complete with all your sashings. I'm sure it'll be breathtaking.

JanRN .... hip hip hooray for your FART. Have a FUN and quilty-spendy day with your friend. We'll look forward to hearing/seeing all about it!

deranged_damsel 06-13-2012 08:15 AM

now for me to sound like QuiltE..... "PLEASE OH PLEASE share the cookie recipe" :D

.......... and to keep with the theme of the week
"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream"
........ and make that with cookies, of course!!!! ;)

QuiltingNinaSue 06-13-2012 03:55 PM

Anne found almost the same recipe on internet; yep, that figures with the modern age of technology. Thanks, Anne. Everyone enjoy being a 'cookie monster'...I would bake on Sunday morning, 110 cookies and son would have eaten everyone of them by Wednesday every week when he was a teenager....along with 3 gallon of milk.

If I skipped anyone's request, please let me know. I think I ended up planting the same tire twice with beans yesterday...so it will be a salad of green and yellow beans. Also planted the Horticulture pole beans and Derby Beans, which the last is a new variety they tell me. Planted turnips, too. Peel those, cut up like potatoes and combine them with potatoes (half and half) when almost done, add a bit of milk(cream,if desired) ,1/4 c. of sugar. a bit of butter and enjoy.

GGal---which shop is this at? Indiana isn't too far of a drive and I might be able to drag a friend or two along too. :) Yes, I might be considered a KT addict.

Actually it's in Illinois. I live right on the state border. Here is the link to the store and retreat center.
http://www.threadsoftimefab.com/. Let me know if you're coming. I'd love to meet you IRL!

oksewglad 06-13-2012 06:16 PM

Thanks for the update Anne. Personally I find the "Knight" story interesting. Chickasaw County is the next county over and down from me. When DH was a kid his dad bought a young cow from a man with that surname from that area. Cow's name was STELLA. Always dipped her tail in the gutter and then washed her back with it. DH was disappointed as she never had a heifer calf. Other than her sloppiness she was a very good milk cow.

Anxious to see the MCompass, Carrie. Hope you commented on how it went together
QNS, never tasted turnips before, but may have to--that potato turnip combo sounds so simple, but sooo good. Today fixed potato/corn chowder for dinner--mumm good and gone. One thing I buy is whole dry milk. With the influx of Hispanics to the area it is now common on the grocery shelf. (They reconstitute if for their kids to drink.) Nestle makes the product in a couple size cans. NIDO is the Spanish name for it. I mix equal proportions of dry milk (NIDO) and flour together and put it in a jar near the stove. Whenever I want to thicken a soup or gravy I stir it into the liquid. Worked great with my chowder today.
Meanwhile back in the sewing kitchen, I'm cooking up a box of chocolates! GS has a basket fundraiser at the Fair to help defray enrollment costs. His club's basket is "Death by Chocolate". One of the dad's made a coffin for the basket, I'm making the lining (a table topper in browns) and they are filling it with lots of chocolate items--candy, chocolate soaps, box of decadent brownie mix, hot chocolate, etc. Will share my finished product when done, Must be done by Monday. Then kids start filling the house on Friday night, some stay the weekend, others all week.

Oh GGal, that sounds so tempting; a KT retreat would be fun. Too bad it's not in the cards, I'm sure Carrie and I would have a great time together if we joined you!

QuiltE 06-13-2012 07:25 PM

OKSGlad ... great idea on the powdered milk and flour combo! The Death by Chocolate basket sounds like a fun one. Do you have a source for "Chocolate Cheese"? I got some of it a couple years ago when at one of our Farmer Cheese Co-ops during my holidays. It was absolutely incredible ... if you didn't know, most would think it was chocolate fudge! Wonder what other off-beat chocolate items could be found? Oh I've got one ... there are scented markers that smell like chocolates! Candles too! I'm sure you'll come up with an outstanding liner for the basket ... how about some chocolate covered cherries or chocolate dipped strawberries as your table topper? Will these get auctioned at the Fair? I'll be looking forward to seeing what you create ... and what happens at the Fair.

I've designed this in EQ7. Blocks are 4" PP, yes PP. Have the center block to do and then put it together. Will show pics when done.

QuiltE 06-13-2012 08:04 PM

Imagine that! You, PP! :)

Great looking pattern, and it's going to be an attention getter at the Fair ... looks like this is no tiny basket or should I say coffin!
Are you using the turquoise .... nice combo with the chocolate! :)

oksewglad 06-13-2012 08:07 PM

Yes, using a turquoise, but it's much deeper and richer looking than the sample. This will finish out just under 24" square.

carriem 06-14-2012 03:48 AM

OkSewGlad--what a fun project. I really like some of those blocks.

I get to sew this afternoon and have a friend come over. Then tonight I am having dinner with some other friends and going to "card club" (making greeting cards, not playing a card game). It will be a fun day!!

gardnergal970 06-14-2012 04:29 AM

OKSewGlad...did I understand correctly that you will have a house full of kids beginning this next weekend? If so you have my vote for Grandma of the Year. That to me is more challenging than the beautiful table topper that you've created, even if it is PP! Sounds like you'll be doing a lot of cooking to keep their hollow leg's full if they are typical teenagers.

QuiltingNinaSue 06-14-2012 05:23 AM

Oh, what fun you are having with 'death by chocolate' and having all your kids and grandkids there this weekend!! Lovely pp top you have designed and the colors are wonderful. I miss all the family get togethers' we had as kids; most was Grandmother's family and all of them lay into their eternal resting places. Younger generation hardly knows one another. I could not recognize or name cousins. Even brother kept his children, grandchildren away from us, never wanted us to know them, which is sad. His reason was: we were not religious enough for him. Love hearing how QB families do get together and have fun. Blessed are thee.

oksewglad 06-14-2012 06:31 AM

Yup the kids are coming, the kids are coming. We have 9 GK under the age of 11; granted 5 of them live 1/2 mile and a hill away, but when the others are here they are all here. With 4 kids, 3 of them married it makes for a full house. One of my favorite times, but so glad to see them go home. And everybody chips in; they are at home, not our guests. DH is pleased as it's Father's Day weekend. The girl friend comes in toward the end of next week to check out Iowa. And with Fair next week---aaaggghhhhh. I will survive.

QuiltingNinaSue 06-14-2012 12:41 PM

(Buffalo chips) Cow Patty

1 pound of butter, 2 c brown sugar, 2 c. white sugar, 4 eggs, well beaten, 2 teaspoons of vanilla....cream together. Dry ingredients: 4 c flour, 2 c Quaker oats, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 c pecans, 3 c post toasties (or corn ) 1 c coconut flakes, 1 package each of butterscotch, chocolate and white chips. Mix chips into the flour then combine all together and chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before baking at 360 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. Beware, they will spread and rise, so stay well away from the edge of the cookie sheet and do not crowd the cookies on the sheet. Make even balls equally spaced apart. If you use less butter (1 c or 2 sticks, not 4), the cookies will retain their shape better. I have served them at school, to the neighbors, and to friends and family. I refer to them as "cow piles". If you use the whole pound of butter, take the cookies off of the cookie sheet while they are still hot, lightly brown on top ot medium brown on top, even though it acts like unbaked cookie dough...the cookies will not be uniform in shape. I always "land" my cookies on wax paper on the counter 'cause it saves on clean up time. Personally, I like to add golden raisins and cranberry dry fruit to the batter for more color and texture. Warning: yields many cookies...for a TEXAS crowd...I baked my last ones in two different sessions, but they freeze well. The nuts can be omitted or substituted. This is not word for word what the recipe says, so its not copied per se.

Ok, now you can adapt, change it to suit you all just like the quilt blocks. ..just remember its what a cow eats that shows up in the patty.... have fun.

janRN 06-14-2012 01:44 PM

Thank you, QNS for the recipe. How am I going to explain that I gained weight while making a quilt?? Between the cookie recipe and the Ice Cream Bowl block all I've done is eat sweets this week. I'm blaming all of you!!!

QuiltingNinaSue 06-14-2012 04:23 PM

JanRN, when you gain weight, it give people more to hug & love...until they give you hugs on the installment plan. That's when they hug and mark their place, then go on around to hug again and again. lol!!:o

dublb 06-14-2012 06:04 PM

OMGoodness, how did I forget ta go & find these 2 threads? This means that I'm behind by 14 blocks now. Well I nearly have Does & Darts done. I'm still workin' on my Neice & Nephew's quilts. I sewed the border on her's taday, but it is on wrong, so I put it aside & am takin' a break right now. I'll frog stitch it tamarrow.

JeanieG 06-14-2012 07:21 PM

Well, I am behind now too! Just got back from our monthly camping trip and have one block cut out, and the 2nd I'm PP. Probably won't get to work on it until the weekend!

mirabelle 06-15-2012 04:50 PM

QNS you make me laugh with your wonderful stories, love the instalment plan for hugs:D I am out of sorts at the moment, I took a tumble in my sewing room, got my leg caught up in the sewing machine cord. Well I hit the floor and the machine followed me:thumbdown: It has to go to the technician to be checked out but unfortunately that won't happend for another week. So I thought I would set up my embroidery machine as a straigh sewer but the feed dogs have seized so no straight sewing there. In desperation (I am not kidding) I dragged out my Janome 6000 which was puchased in January 1986, dusted it off, oiled it, told I I still loved it;) and started sewing, but it is just not he same as my newer machine. My sewing room looks like a Pfaff graveyard at the moment and I'm not a happy camper. Maybe this is someone telling me that I need to sit and finish my Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt

carriem 06-15-2012 05:43 PM

Karen--sorry to hear of your tumble in the sewing room! I hope you can find something to work on until your machine is fixed. What a bummer that nothing was working right! Some days are like that unfortunately.

I didn't get any sewing in today. Maybe tomorrow afternoon...

Carrie

dublb 06-15-2012 05:54 PM

Mirabelle -:( I'm so sorry that this happened ta you. Are ya Ok? I know your concern is about your machines but are you Ok?
I love my GFG. It is my waitin' quilt. I take it w/me any where I will be waitin'. Dr.s office visits, when my DMIL is at the beauty shop, when anybody I know has an emergency room trip & I'm sittin w/'em, travelin' in the car.....It's always there waitin' for me ta take. It'll take me years ta finish it, but I don't mind. I hope ya like yours as much as I do mine.

QuiltE 06-15-2012 06:51 PM

MiraB ... oh dear, for your Humpty Dumpty adventure. Looks like you will have two machines going to the shop. Consider the old machine as a way to allow you to appreciate your newer ones even more (once they are back working again). I too hope that YOU are OK ... though with a machine falling on top of your, I fear!

OKSGlad ... your not so mini table topper is going to be beautiful. With all the goodies piled on top of it and in the coffin, no one will know what a beauty they are acquiring. If this is an auction you really do need to find a way to show it off a little more to raise the $$$ !!! Have fun with your kids of all ages !!!!!!! And what a special Father's Day this will be for your DH!

JanRN ... how was that FART? BTW didn't you know that all of QNSue's recipes are calorie free? :)

QNSue ... that recipe will be tried, tested and proven in the not so distant future! As you say, we can adapt it ... I don't think I eer follow a recipe to the n'th degree. Recipes are merely guides, aren't they? And you have me laughing at the instalment plan!!! A new one to me .... and I'd never heard of "muffin top" for the female figure til a few years ago!

mirabelle 06-16-2012 12:34 AM

Thank you everyone for your concerns, I am fine just a very sore knee. The machine didn't hit me thank goodness, just met the floor rather violently.
My embroidery machine will still embroidery so I started a new quilt today, embriodered rose blocks with fussy cut fans in the corners, looking good so far.
Nearly dinner time and my DS is cooking tonight, part of his cooking lessons in preparation of his living on his own, now if I can only get him to do the dishes:D

QuiltingNinaSue 06-16-2012 03:58 AM

MMM....there are dish washers, Mirabelle. DS first wife called me up to ask "What kind of a dishwasher do you have that you don't have to rinse the dishes first?" Apparently, he always skipped that step.lol!!:o

Glad to hear you are OK; machines are replaceable...

mirabelle 06-16-2012 04:13 AM

Thanks NinaSue, the machines are still under warranty so that's good AND he did the dishes. Sad to say I have never owned a dishwasher, but I don't mind. When our children were younger and DH and I were both working long hours it was always our time when cleaning up the kitchen to chat about our day. It is something we still do today when he is home. We have renovated 2 homes and always made room for a dishwasher just never got around to putting one in ourselves, guess we always enjoyed our chat time.

janRN 06-16-2012 04:36 AM

Thanks alot, QE for mentioning me and "muffin top" in the same post!!!!! The abbreviated FART was successful-I found the fabric I was looking for so I can start cutting sashing strips. I'm expecting my sashing to cover a multitude of "sins"-I've found a few blocks that are almost 1/4" too small. I'm hoping I can cheat a little by using a slightly adjusted sashing on those blocks. I'll try to get some sashing cut and post a pic with a few blocks; it's still in the bag in the sewing room. We had to cut the trip short because of an issue with my friend's mom at her nursing home and my mother is also having new problems so I haven't even unpacked my goodies from the FART.
QE did you finish your collage project? If you did and posted a pic I missed it.

It's easy to "frame" the block with another fabric before you add the sashing and you don't have to worry about matching the sashing. I'm looking forward to seeing your color choice. I hope your DM's new problems can be resolved quickly so you can enjoy your FART finds.

janRN 06-16-2012 07:34 AM

Thanks, Ggal, for the suggestion about additional framing. I made a substitute block and miscalculated--it finished at 8" so I'm going to try a frame before I relegate it to The Box That Will Never be Opened.

QuiltE 06-16-2012 12:16 PM

JanRN ... geeeeeeeeesh!!!!!!! And to think I "never" mentioned it in reference to you!!!! :) Despite the abbreviated FART, it looks like it was a successful one. Oh pleeeeeease do show us the fabric ... no need to wait for it to be stitched in place! I do NOT like waiting!!!!!!!!!!! (can you tell I am a tad impatient??:D)

Another tactic I used for too small of blocks in the FWS .... when I had enough for a very narrow seam (1/8"), I sewed it in place, and used a very short stitch to help keep it from fraying (I hope!). I figure with all the quilting, it'll stay put! Of course, wouldn't work if the unfinished block is 8" instead of 8-1/4". Framing it up would work good, and will never be noticed ... will only look like the block was made that way.

dublb 06-16-2012 02:42 PM

I do have a few blocks that are not quite 8.5". My plan is ta frame 'em also. Some of 'em I'll frame in a different color & some I will try ta frame in the same color as the background & hope that it isn't noticeable.
