I felt so privileged to be chosen to pick the March 2010 flower BOM! With the beginning of March, we think of Spring, St. Patrick's Day and the "wearing of the green." So what else could I choose but a Shamrock?

The free pattern can be found here:
http://www.quilterbydesign.com/StarA...f/Shamrock.pdf

This pattern was first published in the March 19, 1932 edition of the Kansas City Star newspaper. Of course, I adapted the pattern somewhat by using fusible web for the applique. I'm still learning to applique, so please forgive my mistakes.

And for those of you interested in history, I found this on the web regarding the origin of the Shamrock:

"The Shamrock, at one time called the "Seamroy", symbolizes the cross and blessed trinity. Before the Christian era it was a sacred plant of the Druids of Ireland because its leaves formed a triad. The well known legend of the Shamrock connects it definitely to St. Patrick and his teaching. Preaching in the open air on the doctrine of the trinity, he is said to have illustrated the existence of the Three in One by plucking a shamrock from the grass growing at his feet and showing it to his congregation. The legend of the shamrock is also connected with that of the banishment of the serpent tribe from Ireland by a tradition that snakes are never seen on trefoil and that it is a remedy against the stings of snakes and scorpions. The trefoil in Arabia is called shamrakh and was sacred in Iran as an emblem of the Persian triads. The trefoil, as noted above, being a sacred plant among the Druids, and three being a mystical number in the Celtic religion as well as all others, it is probable that St. Patrick must have been aware of the significance of his illustration."

Oh, and here is my block:

How pretty! I like this Shamrock better than most I have seen. Should be fun to applique.

I have my January done as of yesterday, Feb. is almost done and will get this done today if I can.

Lol then I will concentrate on my homework for this week before finishing March doll quilt.

I mean do we make more and sew them into a quilt, or do we send our finished block to someone? I never did this before on the board so let me know,I would really like to make this block.

Texas Granny, thanks for your pic, I was trying to figure out how I was going to get my colors to work with this block.

aberi 03-10-2010 12:13 PM

Texas Granny it turned out great!!! I"m relieved because I wasn't sure how I would do my colours for this block. I like the colours you choose. Now I have to go to my staff to find a good clover colour!

A1penny 03-15-2010 04:37 PM

Love the Shamrock! Haven't been on for a while, my husband was sick...then we were away..to get his strenght back! Now I have to get my quilting back again........! This looks fun.

Rainbow 03-26-2010 02:46 AM

LOVE the way people have used this block.

Rettie V. Grama 03-30-2010 05:35 AM

I see what you mean by it needing something. A suggestion would be that you put some piping between the four blocks. Even if it were white, it would cast a shadow and separate the 4 shamrocks.

Glad to see there is another person from Arkansas on this site! I was beginning to think I was the only one here!
