It's nice and easy but makes a nice fairly quick quilt. And as alway you have two choices,,,,,,,,take it or leave it! LOL

It's a fun block, hope everyone enjoys it.

snowb 10-14-2007 11:09 PM

Hi everyone,
Reintroduced myself earlier tonight in the introduction topics. I am pretty much a self taught quilter; took a few classes, but never finished anything. Anyways, just getting back into sewing again and am always wanting to learn . I think this is a great way to learn !
I printed out the pattern. Looks complicated with those HST ( I call them triangle thingys ), but I am willing to give it a go.
Please be patient with me, probably will have lots of ?'s along the way. Computer & posting are really new to me
Going to look through stash tomorrow and start sewing.

amma 10-14-2007 11:20 PM

Snowb welcome to the BOM! :D Take your time, ask questions, definitely no pressure here! 8)

ShellyQ 10-15-2007 02:53 AM

Welcome Snowb, nice to meet you :D Thanks for the great block Kathy, one of my favourites, there is something about the geometry of this block that really appeals to me

kathy 10-15-2007 03:21 AM

Snowb, don't be intimidated by any block, just read carefully sometimes over and over, when you get it cut out (you will have left over pieces) lay your pieces out on the table the way they go then sew, have fun and don't worry if it's not perfect, you'll get better with time.
And welcome to the family

ceannastahr 10-15-2007 03:27 AM

Welcome Snowb kathy is right it looks harder then it realy is. I found that the BOM are a fun wayto learn new things.
By the way where in western NY do you live? I'm near Rochester

quiltmaker101 10-15-2007 05:32 AM

snowb 10-15-2007 12:36 PM

Thanks for all the welcomes & words of encouragement.
I didn't even look through my stash - I just went out and bought some more FQs to ADD to my stash. I am loving this already :P
ceannastahr, Do you actually live in Mt. Morris :?: I live in Medina which is smack dab between Rochester & Buffalo.

snowb 10-15-2007 01:08 PM

OK. . . Newbieness in me coming out ! I am lost. I am looking for the long list that has the threads for the patterns & one for pictures. Could someone at least point me in the right direction.

mimisharon 10-15-2007 04:15 PM

Hey Snowb,
So glad you are joining us in our quest to try new and fun things! I had to really dig through some of my stash to find the colors suggested. I am going to do one the way it's supposed to be, then I'll branch out. I found a shortage in my stash, need more printed greens and yellows. I'm going to get with it and go shopping soon.

Welcome to the best of the best in quilting sites! Soooo glad to have you to join us!

Sharon

Welcome snowb. I've been in/through Medina and there's a cemetery there (pardon the pun) that's 'to die for'. Do you know the one that's right by the road but has a winding car/hearse path up the hill through some stately old trees and has either a stone or brick caretaker's shed at the gate? I remember there were names of Brown and Bowen (familiar names to me) on headstones near the road. I made pictures and said that was one place I thought I could rest in peace. Do you know the place? It was before digital, so I'll have to look through prints sometime.

snowb 10-16-2007 04:18 PM

Hello there - On The Go
I know the cemetery you are talking about. It's called Boxwood Cemetery and is a very old one. I am really surprised that someone actually knows where Medina is !!! I have been to Knoxville; I think it was in 1984 for the world's fair. Have always wanted to go back and spent more time in the Smokey Mtns.
Well, it's back to my block. I am still cutting it out.

snowb 10-16-2007 04:36 PM

Sharon - Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I have been reading a few other quilt & sewing boards and I agree with you 100%. I think this one is the best !!! You all seem like one big family.
I decided that I only wanted to use 3 colors in my BOM. Took my awhile to figure out how many triangles of each color I needed, but now that I got it I'm on a roll & I shall roll back to do some more cutting now.

OnTheGo 10-16-2007 04:53 PM

Snowb, we've been to every state and some many times. I think we've been through Medina twice. When I'm planning, I always like to go some side roads to REALLY see the country. I'd never get on the interstate hwys if it were left entirely to me. A lot of times when we stop for gas or to eat along the way, the locals will ask "Why did you come through here?" Or "How did you find this place?" That's the fun of travel...for me. I'm not a fan of luxury tours...I like to see the REAL world.

I have thought about that cemetery several times since. I thought it looked so peaceful.

http://members.shaw.ca/kigraham/basic/Cardtrick.html

OnTheGo 10-24-2007 09:25 AM

Looks like that might also be paper pieced in 3 sections.

DonnaRae 10-24-2007 09:26 AM

Hmmmmm, have to check it out!

OnTheGo 10-24-2007 09:29 AM

Well, maybe not. I'll also have to study it more when I have time, but it will definitely make it less 'seamy".

Also
http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/45/2745.page

Shelly and Patrice have posted an alternate method of making this block.
Hope this helps.

DonnaRae 10-25-2007 07:51 AM

I would copy and put it up but I do not know if it is against copy right rules. I aready have been scolded once. Anyway here is the link again. It is really short easy instructions so I hope you can get there, or maybe someone will let me know if I can post the directions here.
:-o

DonnaRae 10-25-2007 07:56 AM

Well Shelly shows how to PP in two of the files. So now we know there is a PP pattern, but it has just as many seams so I would rather Rotary cut and piece so that answers PP for me. Go directions though espicially if you PP thanks. :D

DonnaRae 10-25-2007 07:57 AM

I meant Good Directions

ShellyQ 10-25-2007 02:09 PM

Hi Donna, Many thanks :D , I agree with you about the paper piecing. I originally drew these up as minitures, so it really is only worth the time and effort to PP this block if you are doing minis, for the accuracy, otherwise in the larger sizes I rotary cut and piece normally, except I do it in squares and rectangles instead of triangles :P

DonnaRae 10-25-2007 02:18 PM

Hi, and thanks for the input. Glad you agree about the PP. I do think that like you said if it was small I would PP only for accurancy. Awesome instructions, did you do those yourself?? I am looking for you next time I need some help :D

ShellyQ 10-26-2007 01:33 PM

What? there are instructions  , I betta go look, be right back

Aren't I slack  , I hadn't even downloaded them to see what Patrice had done with my files.
No is mostly Patrice's work, I just sent her a file of my pattern in EQ5 formatt. I don't have a PDF writer myself, so if I have some thing I think might be of use, I just send it to her. I hope I'm not too much of pain in the bum to her :? . I do plan to eventually get my own program, but funds are a bit tight at the moment, so in the meantime I have to keep hasselling Patrice :P

patricej 10-26-2007 01:36 PM

it's a very expensive program. i bought mine as an investment toward my someday dream business.

no, Shelly, you are definitely not a pain in the bum. or in any other body part. i was happy to do it.

i just wish you hadn't threatened the dogs. one of them is still in therapy!

DonnaRae 10-26-2007 03:14 PM

Hi Patrice, I have a PDF my brother installed for me and I don't even know how to use it. It has too many things going on! And I do not see myself learning it anytime soon as I have four other new things to learn. Was the one you have hard to learn or user friendly?

patricej 10-26-2007 05:13 PM

i can't really decide whether or not it's user friendly.

it would probably be difficult if i wanted to figure out and use everything it does. i don't. i just want to be able to create my own pdfs and to edit them if they need it. (usually at the office, or if i find a mistake in instructions i've written myself. i wouldn't change copyrighted files even if they aren't locked.)

it's easy to convert files from almost any windows program to .pdf using the acrobat. it installs a virtual printer. when you want to create a .pdf, one method (and the easiest) is to "print" to the pdf printer. that creates the new file for you.

DonnaRae 10-26-2007 06:17 PM

Hmmm. maybe if I just look to use it for PDF like you said it would not seem so intimadating. I am usually pretty good at learning and on my own, but this is a really large program with just too much going on. Probably like yours does. I have been learning Html using the program (my brother showed me how to do some things with html and like he said you really start to get it, it just looks hard) which I suppose is good to know. Well anyway thanks for the input. I think I will take a little bit of time each day to learn alittle. :-)

susan s. 11-01-2007 06:28 AM

Kathy, great! I fanally found your BOM and I love it! That's one block which I've had in mind to do. I've seen in a couple versons in quilt shops here in town and I tell you they behaved as if it were a secret ninja pattern that would cost tons of $$ and of course only they could teach you how to do it!
