I've actually never done one before, But after seeing peoples tops from last year, I getthe feeling that I should be coordinating my block colors? I guess It would look pretty silly to have a technicolor dream quilt huh?

DA Mayer 08-27-2008 08:53 AM

recently someone posted a sampler quilt with many different colors with the same depth of colors. like all brights or all mediums or all darks.

I think it's totally up to you. If they're not coordinated, it just gives a bit of a scrappy look. I don't think there are any rules :) :) Not around this board anyway!

phew!! I am going to start going backwards to catch up with this years blocks. im so excited!

I usually make my blocks diffrent - because I am practicing things I usually do not do. Mine would look pretty funny put all together, but who knows?

patricej 08-27-2008 01:39 PM

i'll bet the differently colored blocks will not look funny if you tie them all together with standard sashing fabric(s).

There are a couple ways to do a bom.
#1. choose whatever fabric you want. They always work.
#2. choose one color family and use light medium and dark.
#3. choose a fabric that "grabs" you. One that has a lot of color, then pick a few that coordinate with it and a background....like this:

Okay how much fabric would you buy of each to do something like this?

I have a very basic question - what exactly is the BOM? I gather that someone posts a BOM the first of each month, and everyone can do whatever they want to with it? Is that about the extent of it? I've only watched the posts here, never participated, so that's why my question is so basic. Thanks for any extra info.

BOM is Bill of Material but no amounts I guess is given.

BOM is block of the month, but we do it twice a month so we can all take a turn to choose, it's mostly to try new techniques . It's a little push sometimes to get you to try something you might not do on your own. No contest or compitetion just lots of fun. Some people do try to coordinate the colors and use them in a quilt, some do something totally different with eack block, it's totally up to you, it's your block. There are some that give some of us problems and this way we can share problems and solutions with each other. And sometimes we just laugh at ourselves.

Thank you, Kathy. I think I'll join in - it sounds like fun!

I have never done a BOM and don't quite understand it. Do you send the blocks to someone else??????
Please inform me.

thanks ef

No, it's not a swap. You keep your blocks. You make the ones you want, don't make the ones you don't. They are archived in the Block of the Month section. There are directions for how to make the block and then pictures posted by folks who've tried it.

Just jump in with the BOMs. They are great fun and give you lots of practice. There have been some stunning BOM quilts made. Here's one that I just adore. It's by one of the board members here, Yvonne.

that's the beauty of the way we do the BsOM around here. there's no absolutely right or wrong place to start or stop. just jump in anytime; do the ones you like; skip the ones you don't. i still have blocks undone from 2007, in addition to most of them from 2008. i don't fret because i know they'll be there when i can get to them. (one reason it pays to be one of the people who maintains the list.  )

Blocks don't have to be made just for quilts either. They look amazing framed and hung on the wall and would make great gifts this way.
