Rhonda - I do have a question for you.....when you are "creating" your blocks using your cut-down method, do you put any thought as to lights / darks, etc. ??? Or, do you just go for it?

I'm taking scraps and sewing them together to cut down. I am considering contrasting fabrics when I sew them together but not thinking about putting a "light" in each one.

When you design you have to make choices. One of them is am I doing a controlled look or a totally scrappy look. it is just something you can choose. I am more of a controlled scrappy person. I prefer a light dark situation so I can get a distinct design to show up. I use light med and dark to get the looks I want. I like lots of contrast to make the pattern pop. If you use meds together and lights together etc then your sections will blend and you wont' have a specific design. But that is a choice to make. Either one is great just a diff look.

One thing I like to do when I want to do scrappy but keep it controlled is to use colors that are opposite so they each stand out. so I'd use reds and creams and maybe a blue or green. Then all my reds would be diff fabs. and all the creams diff fabrics etc. that way I am controlling the pattern but still making it scrappy.

I rarely do anything that is totally scrappy with no thought to how and why the pieces are placed. Even my confusion(my version of crazy quilting) is somewhat planned.

my friend Dorothy does all my prep work for me and she brings her ideas to the table on colors. I tend to lean toward prints with a white to cream background matched with a like colors med to dark prints. she is more of the ah heck just throw it in version. LOL

so she has done some combinations of med/darks and med/ med. they have their place in the scheme of things for me but I still tend to use more of the light / darks.

When making Bostons I do usually prefer light/med for the top and dark for the bottoms. but in some designs that goes out hte window and the pattern may call for a light on the bottom and two meds for the top quarter sqs.

Rhonda, I haven't made any of your blocks yet, BUT do have them into Word so I can 'grab n' go' when I want to...BUT I have a question - what size are the cut blocks for this last one you've listed..? I've noticed you make some of the blocks w/ 3 1/2" sqs., but then some aren't...I hope to get start making some of these soon...

I also have saved all of the blocks in a word program. Working on two quilts now(1 king size and 1 baby) than want to start this scrap quilt. Always wanted to make a sampler quilt and your blocks are very different and easy. Really like the last block and the quilt sample. May have to make that one too. Thank you again.

Templates to use:

12 1/2" quilt block unfinished

6 rows of 6 blocks = 2 1/2" template
4 rows of 4 blocks = 3 1/2" template
3 rows of 3 blocks = 4 1/2" template

So you just have to look and see how the block is made up.
You can see below the individual blocks are laid out in the layout pic (second pic of each quilt block)

Oksew when I do my minis I use the 1 1/2" or the 1 1/4" template and I usually use the 6 x6 grid for my hotpads or anything that size. I also use the 1 /4" for the checkbooks bookmarks or eyeglass cases etc. and those are usually approx 4 blocks by 8 blocks and sometimes with sashing to extend it if needed.

Thank you Rhonda..I do have templates so soon as I can I want to start making these blocks - they sure are unique..I've saved them to Word as I said, and am sending them to a friend so she can do them with me..
