A friend is shipping me her husbands ties and would like a lap quilt. I need information on how to go about it and patterns. I also wonder about should I wash the ties first? Should the seams be more then 1/4? This is a quilt that they plan on passing on as a heirloom but still use it.

I have made a necktie quilt and they are beautiful. Try the book Daddy's Ties by Shirley Botsford's, great ideas. Take the stitching out and the interfaceing then wash by hand and line dry. Beautiful Material, have fun. Try the Christmas Stocking real cute.

expect that some of the ties will ravel more than others--I made a tie skirt during my hippie days in high school, and they were different weights, some silk others a poly, etc. Since it's entended as a heirloom--maybe foundation pieced?
