I recently (last month) saw a cool "pick up stick" quilt as I was searching through "easy quilting patterns" on the internet. This one consisted of Vertical and Horizontal lines, not diagonal lines. I am still trying to find it again without much luck. Most come back with diagonal lines. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recall that there was one on the cover of Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting magazine last year. I am sure you can find it on their website. Or, just take a bunch of 5" squares, cut them in half, then take a bunch of 1.5"x 5" strips, sew one to a half square, then sew the other half of the square to it (like a rail fence block, except the center "stick" is narrower). Arrange your blocks so that every other one has the stick horizontal, and every other one has the stick vertical.
