He asked why I would go to the trouble of getting a university degree “just for some old hobby.” I love traditional quilts because they comfort me, but I also like unconventional ones, having been influenced by Beth and Jeffrey Gutcheon’s The Quilt Design Workbook, published in 1976 (and even made the quilt on the cover). My question is this: do you consider quilting a hobby or an art, or both?
I think it can be whatever you want it to be.

I am new at quilting but I think quilting is an Art. It requires skill, color knowledge, patience, practice along with devotion to the piece as a creative expression of the artist/quilter. I have a degree in art and I may not have as much success with a quilt as I do with painting or illustrating but I go through the same creative process. I think people that make these beautiful quilts and consider it just a hobby or past time don't realize what an artist they really are. (IMHO) ;-)

I think quilting is both. Look at the shows and it will show you what a lovely art form these can be. People who quilt put their hearts and souls into their projects. It is a wonderful hobby but also beautiful artistically. Art is more than pen to paper or paint to canvas. It covers all aspects and products that can be put to decorative use. I hope you can enjoy it as much as I do.
