Quilting over fat seams

We started using our Tin Lizzie a few months ago. We practiced on whole cloth and were ready to do a real quilt top. When we started quilting on the pieced top, the machine would resist and drag when the machine crossed the corner seams. Everything I have read about machine quilting says to stay relaxed and not hold the handles too tightly. When we hit these seams we have to push through them, distorting the pattern. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, is there a solution?

I don't have a long arm but, sometimes I use a size 16 needle and that helps, other times Iquilt close to but not through the seams, like do a circle around the thick intersections.
