This was on the web page of the dog rescue where we got Leo (or, after reading this, maybe you'll agree that he saved us instead). I thought y'all might find it as sweet & touching as I did. It makes me tear up.

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

Truthfully? He saved us. We'd had to have our other dog put down & were in a real low place. Leo won't let you be in a low place... unless you bring a ball along for him to chase... LOL!

I have tears in my eyes and I'm hugging my rescued dog. She has blessed my husband and I in so many ways - I know I couldn't possibly list them all! Thank you so much for posting.

How true this is. One of the things I love about my two rescue dogs is that they make me smile every day. No matter what a rotten day it is, no matter how low I'm feeling, they always make me smile.

my kids adopted Poo-Chie for me as a Xmas gift 4 years ago. I waned to someday have a rat terrier, Poo-Chie is toy poodle and chihuahua mix but kids thought she looked like a terrier. It was three weeks to Xmas when they came in and handed me this small red foil gift bag and told me it wouldn't keep til Xmas. I opened it to find a very little brown and white pup with the most expressive big brown eyes. Only eight weeks old and so scared, she immediately found a place in my heart and in my bed as she wouldnt stay in the laundry basket at the foot of the bed. She has become my constant companion and staunch protector. She hasnt figured out yet that people arent really scared of her 10.5 lbs of ferociousness specially since she wears her heart(large rounded heart-shaped spot) on her back for all to see .

When I lost my sweet dog CoCo to cancer, there was such a yawning void. She was my constant companion and friend. I would reach down to pet her and of course she wasn't there. It was just six weeks after my loss that I went to adopt another dog from the pound. I know some people may think that it's too soon but Tag, my new dog, does not know that the early pets were as much for him as for CoCo. Everyone is different, but my advice is don't be afraid to give your heart to another friend.
