Default What size to make Receiving Blankets?

I'm making receiving blankets for my soon to be born GGD. What size do you recommend? My DIL said the 30X30 size that are generally sold are too small. I made one so far , it's 40X40, and it looks a little big to me. This is before washing and I do expect some shrinkage. What size would be most useful? Also how many does a mother need? I bought a bolt of flannel but can buy more if needed. I know nothing about this as my children were all adopted as older kids. Thanks, Mary

Bless you for adopting. I usually use 40 x 40 because I liked them square. At the least I would do 34 x 40.

40x40 is plenty big. My boys both got couple blankets thatsize as gifts. They used them way pst crib days. Loved them for naptime. 34x40 is good size

Thanks ladies. I made them all 40X40. I think 4 should be enough. That leaves me enough flannel to back another quilt for her.

I make mine 36" square and use the extra fabric for decoration on a pre-folded diaper for a burp pad.

I buy a yard of flannel, serge all around the edges, and you have a nice receiving blanket.

My friend buys a yard of two fabrics, wash the flannel and that was the size she made.

I buy 1 1/4 yds of flannel, square it without the selvages, round corners, serge with wooly nylon. I have made "tons" of these throughout the years, and have never had a mom that did not like the big size. They love them.
