I am a former nail biter. I bit my finger nails for 25 years or so. I decided in May that I was going to quit. I wanted to have pretty nails for my 30th birthday in June. SUCCESS! I stopped, and I had beautiful nails, and they kept growing.
I had several people comment on how nice my nails were.
Today, I broke three of them on one hand. They couldn't just be a small break. They had to break near the quick.
Now, it looks like I didn't stop biting my nails.
I hope they grow fast.

Ouch! Yes, I've been right where you are. I've been quit now for two years but when they get short and ragged like that it's so hard to keep them out of my mouth!

Go get a manicure. Like, right now. Short is chic!

Former nail biter here. I stopped cold turkey when I became a bank teller and people were always looking at my hands. Just ... stopped. That was ... back in the 80's :)

The good news for your new nails is that it's August. Nails and hair grow the fastest late June - August, I believe (but not sure as I learned this a LONG time ago) because of the longer exposure to sunlight (vitamin D). I can attest to the fact that my hair and nails do indeed grow fastest these months.

Also remember Jello being good for nails, but not sure if that is an old wives tail.

yep...that is how it always happens..can't ever just ONE nail either...drives me nuts...when I get all of them at a decent length at one time, I go and have them gel coated...keeps them stronger!

Try to add a layer of nail polish every 3rd day. And if possible, look for a Walmart brand of nail polish called HOOF. It makes the nails stronger. I was only able to find one bottle there and then for whatever reason they've been out of it since. Even the new Walmart doesn't carry it, but they do have it online. I discovered it right here on this forum, and loved it. Used it 2 or 3 times then my cat got hold of it and now I can't find it.

Yes, gelatin is good for your nails! Keeping them polished may help--? :)

former nail biter here, too... just decided I hated the look of it... that was December of 1970...

Now... about the manicure... there are simple manicures and fancy-schmancy manicures... but if you want to keep away from the habit, I agree... get as fancy a manicure as you can afford!

Not a nail biter but trying to get my nails to grow. Taking my calcium/magnesium supplement regularly really helps. I also try to keep a coat of Essie Millionails on them. That really helps, too.

My nails grow like crazy which makes my manicurist happy (go every 3 weeks or so) but they are really strong, naturally. She has to file with file designed for false nails. Don't know why they just grow well I guess. I recently tried the gel coating to protect them and it really ruined my nails. Once it was removed 3-4 weeks later my nails were thin and peeling. I called dermatologist and she said the gel coating is similar to acrylic used in acrylic nails and stops nails from getting air. It has taken almost 3 months to get my nails back strong like before. I do make a habit of keeping a base, 3 coats of color and a top coat on my nails all the time to prevent bad breaks but they hold up well to typing all day (I work on taxes and investment files all day), yard work, sewing, etc.
