Having been in this position 20 years ago when the computer industry consolidated and tightened up, I know what you're going through. A couple of pieces of unsolicited advice:

1) Start your job hunt now, not when your unemployment runs out. Your job right now is to 'find a job.' With the market like it is, it may take some time and you may find yourself headed in a new direction. You may not find anything making the money you make now. Chances are though, it will pay more than unemployment.

2) Don't get discouraged. These things take time. It's easier to do when you are not completely without income. You'll also interview better while you still have the unemployment safety net - it's an attitude thing.

One more thing.

I never did go back into my old field - computer programming. I became an accountant, working for a CPA. I eventually opened my own bookkeeping business so I could work around the kids' schedules. I've now added the quilting business. I guess my point is, go with the opportunities you find. You may find something you like better than your last job. ATTITUDE....It's all attitude!!!

Ive seen my boss do similar things to other good people i think he just doesnt like to keep people too long it probly isnt worth fighting this issue

I was going to try and find something in the sewing field we have some upholstery shops and things around here. I was a welder mostly at my last job but i did also sew awnings and other things together for them so i gained a new skill while i worked there.

Chris, I am so sorry to hear about your job but knew you didn't totally "like" it. This economic "downturn" is causing lots of changes for lots of people.

Let's just hope that "when one door closes, another door opens......." applies here.....

Regardless, change is always difficult to deal with and my thoughts are with you. Thank goodness for unemployment!

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your job. My boyfriend was laid off from his job of 12 years the day before thanksgiving! It is so tough out there right now!! There are no jobs anywhere!! My mom was also temporarily laid off while her job changes owners.

In these tough times, it is best to try to be optimistic. When one door closes, another door opens!! I wish you the best of luck, and enjoy the vacation that you have been given!!!!
