My DD2 who lives in Vermont, did not have a sewing machine. Her birthday was yesterday and I ordered from Amazon a Brother cs6000i. Did I do the right thing? Several people on this board have said that they really liked theirs. She does not quilt or sew clothes - yet. Is this too much machine for her? I have never used a computerized machine, but she is a computer whiz so that part she will have no trouble with. She has done very little sewing except in high school home ec.
I would appreciate your opinions. I figure if she does not like it I can pick it up when we visit next year and get her one she likes.

I am a beginner quilter and this is the machine I purchased for myself to learn on I have been using it for a few years now and it does everything I need and has been vry easy to use and understand You bought her a great gift that will last her many many years

This is the model I bought, to replace my 20 + year old mechanical machine. I was a bit intimidated at first, I admit. I learned one precaution right away: Always turn off and UNPLUG your machine right BEFORE a storm. Or if you go to bed, or walk away for more than a couple minutes. It is very sensitive to variations in electrical current.
It has Lots of stitches, which I have not used yet. The user manual is very detailed.
It uses Brother plastic bobbins and tells the new owner to ALWAYS use ONLY these bobbins, but ho, ho, ho, I must have been asleep at the wheel... I went to change thread color and suddenly I realized I had been using my old metal "J 15" bobbins that fit the old model Singers and New Home (Janome) machines. These can be used with no difficulties. hope this helps set your mind at ease.

Thank you all for your replies. I am glad to hear it is a good beginner machine and easy to use. She has never really been interested in sewing, but she left home at 18 and has always lived far away so has been 'out of my influence'. LOL She has always liked the quilts I've made. Since her name is Susan, I made her a Sunbonnet Sue when she was in high school. And she was the first one to claim a family heirloom quilt made by DH's grandmother.
Regarding the bobbins, just to be on the safe side, I sent her a package of plastic bobbins. I'll warn her about the electricity. Probably a good idea to have a surge protector just like on a PC.
