I had to do a very sad thing Friday. I had to have my beloved cat Molley put to sleep because she at some thread. I did not know that this is dangerous for cats. They can not pass it through their stomachs and it causes the stomach to fold back over on its self and eventually causes perforation of the bowel. That is what happened to Molley and inspite of the efforts of the vet to save her it was to late. So please watch you cats that they don't eat thread. My vet said that is one of the biggest killers of house cats where their owners do sewing of any kind. I miss her so much and if I had known this I never would have allowed her into my sewing room.

So sorry for your loss. We just had to put down our dog of 15 1/2 years, how sadly awful. I know your heart is hurting. Will keep you in my prayers!

OMG, I'm so sorry for your loss. My Schmoo ate a 4 inch piece of thread about 4 months ago, I don't know if it's still in her but she hasn't had any problems.

Gee, I'll definitely be more careful with the threads from now on. I hope Schmoo will be ok, since it was such a long time ago.

I'm so sorry. I had a friend who's cat loved to eat those black, elastic, ponytail holders. Same thing happened.

how sad! i try to be so careful with my allie cats. when i first got her i was talking to my mom and told her how cats cannot eat thread and she brought up the subject of how years ago people would give their cats balls of yarn to play with. scary to think back then how many furbabies could have probably had longer lives.

I am so sorry! Even as careful as I am about keeping it away from them I have pulled thread out of my dog and cat's mouths. I lost 2 cats (old age) and a dog last fall and even though I still have a cat and just got a puppy my heart aches for them every day. I will keep you in my thoughts!

You would definitely have had to deal with it by now, so I think she's fine. A 4" piece likely passed pretty easily.

So sorry about your loss! My cats got into my little sewing basket and started eating the thread. She was on the other side of the room when I saw the spool laying on the floor. I picked it up and it was still attached to her across the room. I pulled and pulled and got the big clump out of her throat. Now, I make sure there isn't any for her to get. Also, I have a German Shepherd who will eat fabric scraps. I didn't realize this was happening until he was outside and I noticed he was having trouble doing his "Business" I went out side to see what was up and he had a strip of fabric hanging outside his body. I had to help him "finish the job" and now I keep the door to my sewing room closed when I'm not in there.

Oh no Vi, I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

I'm pretty vigilant about pins and thread escaping my worktable but it can happen to anyone -- and my furbabies have certainly had their share of close calls. I consider myself extremely lucky that a severe accident hasn't happened here yet with all the pets we have.
