When my SIL was in Chiro college at Palmer in Davenport Ia he took courses and has continued education so he can determine if a patient has a condition that needs to be seen by a medical doctor and he refers people all the time when needed.

Most reputable chiropractors will refer when needed.
Well mine did not and I just realized one day that he wasn't going to fix me and he was only in it for the money......but I loved the massage table!

I would wholeheartedly disagree with that statement.

When I was a kid, I took a few tumbles and since nothing was bleeding or broken, the incidents were simply ignored. Fast forward about 20 years and I got to the point where I literally couldn't walk. There were days that I crawled on all fours and lived on the hide-a-bed.

A friend talked me into crawling to a chiropractor and he started me on a regiment that started 3x a week and slowly whittled down the visits. It took a while but eventually I was among the two-legged creatures again.

We moved and I changed Chiropractors. Now I go when I get a hitch in my getup for maintenance.
I also disagree. Some people go for years with problems, before they even try a chiropractor. There are many different problems and severities of problems. No one knows, sight unseen, how many treatments it can take to start seeing improvement.

But it never hurts to get a second opinion.
Notice my chiro said improvement, not out and out forever cure in 3 visits. Only you can decide if your pain is better, stable or worse from day to day. There are also some shiesters (such as the one who told me I would be wheelchair bound, only SHE could save my ability to walk) out there who will take advantage of anyone they can, even those in pain. Why waste the 2 months and the $ on someone who cannot help, and find someone who can? Just as with physicians, some are better than others.

Chiropractor is hands-on. This is what my chiro doctor says. An adjuster, whatever that is, can't feel what need to be adjusted. Bulging disc or dics problems most like should be seem by a good medical doctor.
I went to a pain managment special for pain in my hand he told me it carpel tunel. He only does surgery as a last resort.

Most insurance has a limit on the number of visits you can have. I find chiropractors who have a prescribed number of visits may just be trying to get as much as he can from the insurance. Try a second opinion.

Actually I found that the pain can get worse during the beginning of treatment (just like with acupuncture) because everything being shuffled around a bit. When I started my program MANY years ago, I knew that it would be a long road to recovery. I am so glad I stuck it out. Totally agree with you on the less than reputable lot. They can do more harm than good and unfortunately give the good ones a bad reputation as well.

When I started seeing my chiropractor I was in such pain that I couldn't sleep at night. I have 6 herniated discs in my neck and upper back. The MD I saw wanted to do surgery. I go to my chiropractor every two or three weeks now and have been for two years. He keeps me able to function, I know when it's time to go. I don't have medical insurance and his fees are very reasonable. Also I get 2 visits free if I pay for ten in advance.

It doesn't hurt and is a good idea to maybe get a second opinion. Just as a medical dr there are differant opinions.
When Ben does anything he always explains what the body is doing and what the procedure he uses does to fix the problem. He educates you as well as fixes you. so if your DR didn't tell you ask why so many visits and what they will do for you.

It is important as a patient to be knowledgable in all areas of your care.
I totally agree and that has been my experience. My cp does not encourage me to buy anything from her or charge different prices. She takes all the time I need to answer questions and show me stretches that will help to keep me aligned. And we talk about nutrition when she is asked. She is fabulous and will be part of my health practices as long as long as she is practicing.

Hey Rhonda- my nephew went to the same college!! :D
He is fantastic but unfortunately lives in NY so I don't get to see him a lot. He's a great chiro :) It seemed like school took forever but the results are worth it.

I think getting a second opinion would be a good idea, too!
