Your story is very nice but it sure made me cry. I am the only Girl in my family and I try to make things very nice for my kids. I do have some cookies i make that is a tradition. Now I have started one and I always make Meat balls for Sandwiches on Christmas Eve or before depending when Christmas falls.

From what we have for Thanksgiving dinner right down to the sides and then for Christmas its rouladins with mashed potatoes n sour cream gravy. We have certain dishes we use with each holiday and even this yr when my daughter cooked because I was working she came to my house and picked up the dishes to be used. They each get Christmas PJS to wear for Christmas morning. The kids are allowed to only open their stockings when they get up before the parents (always allowed me to get extra sleep time in). I always get them lifesavers books, its great now because for the littler ones they now make lifesaver gummies. We have the Christmas pickle hung on the tree for the lucky child to find. Each present it given out to the person and told who it comes from and once opened and picture taken with it the person has to thank the one giving the gift if they are there. As the presents are unwrapped the trash is put into a large garbage bag. Not only does this make cleaning up easier but it also keeps from things getting accidently thown away. We put up the tree on Thanksgiving and it gets taken down on New Years Day. There are candle opras in the window. I may have not grown up with Christmas and would have to go to school and lie about the presents we got but I made sure my kids never had to go thru that. Even though one yr every thing they got was from the Dollar Store. I think traditions are great. The other one that makes me proud that my daughter does is that in order for my kids to have their name on a present as the giver they would have had to either help make or pay for the gift. No cheating allowed. Most of the time the kids makes crafts for presents. This week my daughter and her friends are getting together with thier kids to bake cookies and make gifts. I'm glad I could give my kids some things to hold onto and pass down to thier kids. Traditions can start at anytime and be added to as time goes by. Merry Christmas to all and no matter what else is going on I hope you all have a great day on the 25th rather you celebrate Christmas or not. May your next yr make you happier than this past year. I'm sure mine will.

Sewingsuz and everyone I'm glad that your Christmases are wonderful now. We make cookies, gingerbreaden, sugar, molasses, etc. We do the pjs, too. And spend the day together either cooking, because we like to or playing with our "new" toys. Merry Christmas everyone!!!

An old tradition is making Christmas cookies with my mom and now my daughter. I buy my girls an ornament every year since they were born.

I make ornaments each year since my kids were born in 86 and 88. That's the only one that survived

Because of many life changes, there are few traditions left in our family. But I always put a beautiful wreath on the door, decorations all over the house and the spirit of love in my heart. We are not together as we are all scattered, but I will never forget my four children when they were children and we had our early morning opening of the presents and my delicious sticky rolls. No matter what happens, I will always have my memories and they are so sweet.

You put into words what I have been trying to post here. Our families grow and expand and with each new member new tradtions are formed. Sometimes old tradtions fall away but there are always some that stay. We always have a tree, a wreath on the front door, gifts from the heart for family and friends, we thank God for our blessings and send Good Wishes for the New Year.

For many years after we were married, we had no traditions of our own. Our holidays were spent running from one side of the family to the other, really not spending much time with either due to travel time. Now, we have our Christmas celebrations whenever the kids can all get here at the same time - it isn't often on Christmas day, but usually before New Years day. We have the same menu, everyone opens gifts, and enjoys most of a day in one another's company, realizing how blessed we are to be able to do that.

I second these emotions too! So many wonderful memories. The one tradition I cannot live without, (but boy my ever-expanding waistline and hips could, is baking Christmas cookies. Love to make many varieties and many dozens. Made mine this past Monday and almost all are tucked in the freezer, ready to be made into trays as gifts.

As I began to put up our tree I remembered things we did over the years but really didn't think of them as 'traditions'. When we were first married I began to buy little nativity figures from the 5 & 10, each year I added one or two as budget allowed. One year DH built a little stable and the boys put the figures in and around it, some years we didn't have room for it under the tree so it was on a table, later it was replaced by a smaller more expensive set up but we always have a nativity under our tree. Cookies, of course, not as many as when I was younger and had more energy but still Christmas cookies. Each year my family meets early in December and I give my brother and sisters a fresh baked fruit bread even though we don't exchange gifts, Christmas cards with little notes to tell friends we don't see how we're doing, etc. These are all little things that we do and don't realize they are tradtions, we do them because they are part of Christmas for us.
