what is it? My friend lost 3 of her dogs to a paralysis about 1 1/2 ago but they never actually named what it was.

The article/link noted by Amma is a very good one and clearly describes the situation. We're in week 3 and the acute crisis has passed; now it's just a matter of time, and I can see small improvements.
