Hi all: What's everyone doing to cope with the heat? I've become best buddies with my crockpot again. Too hot to stand outside to BBQ. Try to throw open all the windows and doors all night long to bring in the cool and shut down as needed in the a.m. Whole lotta ice tea going on. Been doing a lot of machine piecing in the heat of the day. Keeps my mind busy from thinking about the heat and feeling claustrophobic. Can't help but think of the other folks so much worse off than I am. At least it cools down most nights and it doesn't last too long in the northeast.

Any hot weather tricks you care to share?

Turn the a/c on, and it won't feel as hot..
We are near the water, and usually isn't this hot.. It's brutal..

Wow, you don't need your A/C at night??? Sounds lovely!
Iced tea is always a great plan. Drink lots of it with tons of ice!
Anything outside around here is best done before 8 AM (9-10 if it's in the shade) or else after dark in the evening.
Eat lots of salads and other 'cool' stuff, no heavy meals especially at lunch.
Veggies are great to nibble on when it's hot.
If you're going to BBQ, do it after dark when it's cooler (even around here it gets down in the 80s at night)
Leave your car windows down about an inch or so to prevent too much heat build up that can crack windshields

In the old days, my mother would run a fan across a tub that contained a large block of ice (from the ice truck that used to cruise the streets). Not sure where you can get an ice block these days, but I remember that it did help. Maybe dump a couple of bags of purchased ice cubes in a plastic tub?

After the ice melts, you can sit with your feet in the cold water.

I had a great Aunt that did the same thing.
Lots and lots of ice tea and diet Mt.Dew keep me cool while watching the hummingbirds play in the water sprinkler.

I hope that was a joke! If she had an A/C (many of us don't) I'm sure she'd have thought of that!

Same with me. DH allows AC 24/7 so he doesn't have to put up with me.
I ran errands early then stayed indoors the rest of the day.
Still 82 muggy degrees at 9:39 PM.

Hot here too! and tomorrow is to be worse.
Another one without a/c ... other than in my truck.

And there have been times in past years when I got SO hot, that I went for a drive in my truck, even though I had no reason to go!!

Thankfully the saving grace this time round, has been that the night have cooled, and I too open the windows and get some of that cooler air in. However, it's not looking so promising for that tonight.



I have been thinking of buying some insulation batting fabric that I saw last year ... and then quilting on a pretty piece of fabric to hang in my windows where I do not have blinds. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
