I am extremely allergic to artificial sweetners, the only one I can even get close to is Splenda. So I can imagine how dangerous they can be

By all means, skip the artificial sweeteners if they bother you either physically or philosophically – that only makes sense!
It's never a good idea, to assume one knows why another distrusts something or someone.

I discount Snopes as the ultimate authority, because I've read several Snopes claims, I knew for a fact, to be incorrect or biased. Many of us are capable of doing our own research and can tell the difference between opinion and fact. Snopes does a good job, in general. However, it's just not the ultimate authority on everything.

I don't plan to get into a debate but on health-related issues, it's better to research the latest findings from various reputable medical sites. Even still, new side-effects (of drugs, sweeteners, etc.) are discovered, every day.

Just because the original story may not be true does not mean that artificial sweeteners are safe for consumption.

Seldom drink regular soda and even less diet drinks. Too much sugar or too much artificial sweeteners.

Me too, and just like some people are horrified that low carb is so bad for you, only way I can loose weight and have done if off and on for years and at 67 very healthy. Do not smoke or drink, eat in moderation and these days so not drink more than one soda a day, drink water and Arizona ice tea, sugar free. People are different and things affect them in different ways. I feel bad if I eat too much sugar, soda or food. Just like medicine.

No matter if it's true or not - that stuff isn't good for you!!!! I gave up artificial sweeteners and soft drinks almost 2 years ago and have never looked back. I feel better and I have no desire to consume either!! I used to hate water and, I guess for lack of a better explanation, I've gotten used to it - it's not so bad now

Seems by reading these comments, some people have problems with diet. Not everyone does. No symptoms means you must not allergic to it. To sum up: if you don't want to use, eat, drink something --- then don't.

Here is what I know. Ten years ago, I was rushed to the emergency room with such bad stomach pain, I thought I was loosing my mind. It was worse than child birth, kidney stones, gall bladder..... After 5 different pain medications administered to me in the ER and 16 hours of writhing in pain, one of the nurses asked me if I was a diet soda drinker. When I replied that I was and averaged 1-3 a day, they gave me something and she said that she hoped it was a lesson for me. It took a solid week for me to get rid of the caffeine headaches and total pain. If I do want a soda I'll grab the one with sugar--no more fakes for me.

I can tell you this...when Aspartame came on strong in the marketplace, thank you govt. approval, I would get an instant reaction if I ate, or drank anything that contained it. My best friend knew I had said this, but she was a big believer in "sugarless food". We got together every week to paint, and took turns supply lunch, so lunch at her house, dessert was jello, layered with cool whip in neat dessert glasses. I had taken two bites and the eruption started in my belly and I had to excuse myself from the table and head for the bathroom. When I got back to the table, I asked her if it was sugarless jello and she said yes. She apologized profusely, saying she really didn't believe me, that it would affect anyone like that. After that, she promised no more surprises, she believed.
