How much to charge.......
#1
I have a friend who's been asked to sew a rodeo queens outfit and we have no idea how much to charge. Does anyone, in the next few minutes, happen to know the average going ratefor garment sewing? The lady is on her way over to my friend's house, as I type. Eeeek.

What is your time worth per hour? How many hours will it take to make the outfit? Multiply X times Y, you have your answer. Don't undervalue your work.
OVER estimate the number of hours it will take. Always better to tell the customer at the end, Hey it costs less than I quoted you and they are happy.

Thanks, that's exactly what I told her but suggested $10 an hour especially if she was working with satin. I just thought I could easily have over priced her out of a job and didn't want that!

i've been charging $20 an hour for (utility) sewing for people for the past 10 years- i chose that amount thinking it was too much- so people wouldn't want me too-(can you tell-not my favorite passtime) anyhow= didn't work= people are always calling-
but
when i make clothing for someone- the hourly thing has nothing to do with it-
that has to be based on the clothing---how many pattern pieces- how much work- the details ...
and who's buying the pattern, fabric, notions, other materials needed? have to add all that in too...

My friend used to make custom horse show clothing. Lots of applique and Swarowski(?) crystals were involved. Her prices for a rail shirt were usually $1000+, and she had people lined up. Her price did include all materials.
