my dog has an allergic reaction to topical repellant and frontline doesn't work either so when we had an outbreak in late summer this is what we did...takes a while but it works

Salt the floors and carpet down with iodized salt, vaccuum every other day for first two weeks, resalt after vaccuuming increase days between vaccuuming over the month continue till fleas are gone. WARNING: Fleas hibernat(sort of) so may see a new infestation in 3-9months.
wash bed linen every day for 2-3 weeks then increase days between washing. feed brewers yeast they will goble it up no problem takes about 2 monhts for it to totally get rid of fleas may see a flea every now and again but rarely..
also use tea tree oil mixed with water (This should not be used on an open sore) on a cottonball around their necks and in infested areas. Spray carpets and bedding with vanilla scented febreeze when the dogs are not present and it will kill the fleas in the bed linens

Just be careful that whatever flea remedy you use for your house is not something that will harm your pet if ingested. Regularly vaccuuming and washing your dogs bedding and your own linen will help. As a Veterinary Technician my advice is ALWAYS consult your vet when it comes to solving these kinds of problems. They will have options that are safer for your dog.

Growing up in the South, I have seen and tried every flea remedy every known. They don't work, fleas come back and you have to start all over. The flea pills are the best thing ever for dogs. They stop the fleas for good. The pills stop the reproduction of the fleas so that's why most yards are flea free in a few months. We have 3 acres of yard and woods and without the pills it would be impossible to keep the yard treated for fleas plus all those chemicals hurt the good insects. I use Advanatage X to stop the ticks, it works or I wouldn't pay the price for it once a month. Our outside dogs are pest free all year long.
I buy a bag of Pill Pockets. It's soft meaty treats that you push the pill into and every dog I know loves them. My cats will eat them too when they need a pill. I don't give the outside cats a flea pill they get Revolution every month to stop ear mites, fleas, and parasites. Pets are expensive to maintain! LOL

I don't have any barn/farm cats ... if we have cats (and, we do) they do not go outside ... and, the coyotes usually get to any abandoned kittens if anyone is abusing them by leaving them out here in the desert. (Not much help, eh?) <wave>

I use Frontline and it works fine in Maine! Lucky me. But when I get the dog container of his pills and stuff he runs away - he knows what is coming. He eats the heart worm like candy, but does not like the frontline - so cute to see him try and get away. I have heard that about yeast and also garlic powder. Dogs breath is bad enough without garlic!

Boy I didnt think this would get this many responses but some good ideas indeed.

The pills we use are called Confortis (sp) they work wonders and I have not seen the first flea around here in almost 2 years. It is a prescription pill that I pick up at my vets office. They are sized to the dogs weight Stars is a tiny one and the other two dogs are about the size of a small shirt button. But Dixie's is the size of a half dollar so you can imagine trying to hide that one from her.

The vet told me to do what ever as long as she gets it down in her tummy. But she is a smart little thing, too smart if you ask me!!

I always use the peanut butter trick, put some on your finger for the dog to lick off, put a ton on the pill - half a dollar sized pill will probably require a ton - open mouth and insert pill and have dog lick all the peanut butter off you finger, hand or what ever. Works for Rotts, my 68lb. dog and toy dogs. It is so sticky and they are so busy licking, they don't realize they have swallowed anything. With a pill that size you it may work better if you break it in at least half. Keep a separate jar just for giving pills. Dogs love peanut butter, I use crunchy, I think it diguises the pill. Worth a try. Let us know if anything works.

Sounds like the Peanut Butter might do it.

Every night before bed she and I usually share a big fat peanut butter and jelly sandwich or we will have a heaping spoon of peanut butter each. Its a daddy daughter thing :mrgreen:

Frontline works fine on my 75 lb lab mix. in michigan and in trips to n.c. he lived in n.c. for several yrs with a daughter, and it worked fine there also. yeap, we have to protect them cause they're our babies. aye?
