I need some math help. My son plays in a band and wants me to make covers for his drum set to protect it when they are moving in and out of gigs. I'm considering design. At first I was going to make circles for the base but then began to wonder about making "sacks" with a drawstring top. Which is going to use less fabric? All suggestions are welcome.

A drum set needs drum cases, so I am assuming you're making something that is temporary. Does he want the sides of the drums protected? You need a circle of fabric for the top plus fabric to go around the sides. I suggest elastic at the bottom to keep it on the drums not drawstrings. For protection it all probably needs to be heavily padded. Covering the top takes less fabric than covering top and sides. You could also fasten the sides with velcro and not use elastic. Does he stack his drums when he moves them? Does he already have sacks for his high hats, drum sticks and foot pedals? Good luck to you.

I agree with TanyaL - my husband plays drums and they should not be moved to/from gigs in sacks. They need more protection than a sack could provide. The investment in drums is worth protecting!

I have heavy canvas to make these. He's thinking to put a layer of foam over the heads of the drums inside the covers.

My husband and I are both drummers with a local competition pipe band. My snare has a hard case, but my husband's bass drum goes in a padded case.

The case is Cordura on the outside with nylon on the inside and a layer of padding in between.

I also use the Humes and Berg Galaxy stick bag for my large stick collection.

I think that is exactly what my son has in mind! Are those zippered or velcro closures?

The closure, which you can just see at the bottom of the picture, is zippered.
