you know i thought the same thing i took no drugs with any of my deliveries(that was the way back then 30 yrs ago) but as soon as i saw my daughter in pain i said take the drugs there is just not any good reason to be in that much pain. with that said with the second grandchild the baby came so quick 5 min after got to hospital there was no time and she said if she knew how much better she would feel the next day she would not have had the epidural the first time.

My daughter had an epidural with her first child five years ago, and it was terrible. It did not work at all. They said it was because her labor pains were in the back. She had a long, hard labor. The doctor was advising a C-section, but she did finally give birth naturally. She is a very healthy young woman, but she was in the hospital for a week due to high blood pressure and then pneumonia. I (being the Mama) think it was because she had just a hard labor. She is pregnant again now and due in May. I'm wondering how she will do this time - sure hope it is easier than the last time. - Cynthia

All my girls were late - had to be induced for the first two - no epidurals - no fun! I had a different OB for the 3rd - first he told me about the Castor Oil cocktail - 2 ozs each of oj, castor oil, vodka - to get labor started (my third was 10 days late, and I would have had to have been induced again). I had one, minus the vodka, at 8am - just got VERY cleaned out, no labor. Had a few sips of one with the vodka at noon - 1 hour later in good solid labor. He suggested an epidural - Yahoo - loved it. He had to interrupt my husband and I watching Wheel of Fortune to deliver daughter #3. No pain, lots of gain!

To me it isn't about what is trendy or in style for the time, it is about what is better for mother and baby. No drugs is better for baby. Recovery is faster and easier for Mom with no drugs. It's a natural process that is too often interfered with. That is different than when mother and child need medical intervention because there is a problem.

I took Lamaze classes with my first 2 and the third was such a surprise, 13 moinths after the second, there was no time. I never had any drugs, and I credit the relazation techniques learned at the class for being able to do all that without meds. I've used the same techniques over te years for other painful procedures
I went from being in labor 20 hours with the first to practically having my daughter in the labor room
With all 3 I went from being dilated 3 cm to 10 in 3 minutes, there was no time for pain meds
