Stopped in a clothing store that had huge signs up all about 50% off sale PLUS HUGE CLEARANCE...
ok, waaaaaay overpriced things are 50% off - so a 99 dollar blouse is ONLY $50... wheee
so I walk back to the HUGE CLEARANCE racks... sign says ADDITIONAL 50% off Lowest marked price....
EVERYTHING on the rack was lowered by ONE PENNY..
so a $49.99 top is marked down to $49.98 and you "get" an additional 50% off that...

as I was walking out one of the saleslady's says did you find everything, I said, "well I was really impressed by the 'sale'" she says, "I know, isn't it great", I say "yea, marked down a whole penny"... she says, "have a nice day"...

LOL

Wow...just...wow....
I guess they hope it brings in the traffic and people are fooled by the "sale"
Glad you weren't fooled! :D

What a horrible sales gimmick. Sadly enough some people will be fooled.

I know what you mean. When one of our local Walmarts was going out of the fabric business they marked all the fabric up 50 cents to $1 per yard before putting up a sign that said 25% off. Most were higher at 25%off than they had been before.

that's the standard con in outlet stores. they put an obscene "regular price" and then their "discount" price. sorry, but 40% off obscene is still ridiculous. :hunf:

a lot of fabric websites do the same thing. i don't fall for their con jobs, either.

i am definitely crazy, but i ain't stoooooopid.

We went to one of those "designer outlet malls" and they had a "drastic sale" going on.

Didn't buy a thing - The item that stuck out the most were the shorts - I was NEVER going to pay 49.99 for shorts!

Never went back to that outlet.

Got an email about free shipping, so went to the site and ordered the salt and pepper shakers to go with my new dishes and as checking out I was charged shipping - went back to the email and in fine fine print it said - free shipping on an order for over $100.00. Frustrating. And the free shipping part of the ad was the largest part. Did not order. No truth in anything anymore.

I was in Walmart yesterday and they had a "roll-back" sign on their 4lb bags of Talapia--- $12.00 That was $3 dollars more than I'd paid for it just two or three weeks ago. I walked a little farther and found 1 lb bags for $2.38. As I was telling DD to put the big bag back that we'd get the cheaper bags another customer walked by. She said, "The two lb bags are cheaper yet. They're in that freezer case right there." 2 lbs was $4.26!!! Same fish!!

Yup. It's a marketing gimmick. Something called perceived value. That's why I like Target. If it's 50% off there...it's REALLY 50% off.

I noticed that Wal-Mart was doing this thing where we live and it's bothering me a little. You know the "rollback" white stickers/flags they put out? Well, the candy bars at the register (don't ever buy them, but this is where I saw it) the "shelf price" was like $1.30 or something. Then the "rollback" was a dollar or something. Um...they've never BEEN $1.30.

I work in retail for awhile and was appalled at what they did to get sales. Your experience doesn't sound unusual, and what really gets me is the mark up on clothing is. A blouse that is priced 49.99 they could sell for 5.99 and still make money.I could not believe when I did marking what they actually paid for this stuff. Needless to say I don't shop at Penney's anymore.
