I loved Girl on a Train, after I realized there were different characters being talked about, and different timelines. Man, what a confusing mess at first! I had to start again, making mental notes as to who and when. Once I got past that barrier, I thought it was fantastic. I understand the movie is set in New York (?) not in England. That was a disappointment to me. I haven't seen the movie, nor did I see Gone Girl. The book, Gone Girl was creepy. I thought it was good, but unsettling.
They did the movie of Gone Girl in Cape Girardeau, MO, which is near me. And used local extras. Everyone was really stoked about it, and all the stars mingling around. I guess I'm too much an old grump to be star-struck, but it was fun just sitting back and watching the hub-bub. They had star-sighting reports on the local TV channel every night, haha.

Not having read the book, did not know the book is set in England? The movie is definitely New York!

Read the book, wasn't one that I would consider good. I would hope the movie was better.

I thought it was a very strange book and I also read Gone Girl around the same time. Cannot remember many details but thought it very odd at the time. Gone Girl was better.

I absolutely agree that the book was too slow; it was like trying to swim through molasses. My guess is that represented the fog/confusion that Rachels' mind was in.

Q1 - Rachel was living off savings, her friend and self pity.
Q2 - Police pegged her as a looney, and weren't entirely wrong. But even loonies are right sometimes.

The bottom line of the story was that Rachel was emotionally and physically abused by her very charismatic, sociopathic ex-husband, the effect he had on her life, her self esteem and her subsequent choices. It ended the way I thought it would - or maybe the way I hoped it would.

I don't think I will go out of my way to see the movie.

I read the book and stuck with it because a friend gave it to me to read. But I did not like any of the characters in the book. I did not find any of the people likable nor did I sympathize with anyone in the book. Made me wonder how and why anyone could write a book with no redeeming characters
The story line was ok enough to keep me reading.
