I've been there 2 times, and both times I wished we could of stayed. My DH even looked for jobs while we there the 2nd time(2008). Flew into Anchorage, DIL in airforce, so we had the use of their 2nd car and got to babysit our DGD which was about 1 1/2 yrs then, we toured, took her with, saved them a sitter for the week, cause three days before she had to go TDY to the Aleutian Islands for a week. Drove through Eagle River, Palmer, Wasila, Drove part way to Fairbanks, turned back due to the weather and toured Talkaneeta - which we both loved. Lots of history there. We went up for the Iditarod in late Feb that year. DH and son took snowmobiles and went to Petersburg and road near Mt McKinnley.
The first time I took my parents in July 2006, the DGD was to be born. The flowers were in bloom and everything was green, Love it. Spent 2 weeks, course the DGD didn't make her appearance till 3 days before we left :{. She was due the first weekend we were there. My parents to the Alaskian Railway dinner tour with a Glacier cruise.
We visited every quilt shop in Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer and one favorite was in Wasilla. Loads of free stuff to do,if you research, I found a city map, and we did it on our own.
Next time will be next fall, and we will probably drive and take 2 weeks from ND to Yukon and up to Anchorage. and perhaps a cruise on our list sometime. We have family that have enjoyed everyone they have gone on.
If you have a digital camera, take several disc for it, you will take loads of pics.

I haven't been, but I recently had a great conversation about Alaska with a quilt buddy of mine. She and her hubby lived there for nine years and she loved, loved, LOVED it. It was only supposed to be for a year, but they stayed longer because they really enjoyed the lifestyle. All 3 of her children were born there. I tried to pin her down about what she meant by "lifestyle". She said everyone is friendly, no one locks their doors, etc. She said she watches those Alaska shows on tv and when she hears the Eskimos speaking, she feels a sense of peace and happiness come over her. What a wonderful statement that makes about a race!

DH and I returned from Anchorage 10 days ago. The place is beautiful and I would highly recommend everyone going. However -- we soon found out that a lot of tourist attractions in Anchorage close down in mid-September. Several restaurants were closed for the season. We did find one place that was still offering one-day glacier tours. The tour and the three hour bus ride to Seward were great, but that tour had been cancelled for over a week before our trip because of bad weather. With the exception of taxis, there is not a lot of public transportation. Several touring companies offer bus transportation but, again, most of those were closed.
We hope to go again someday, but will definitely go before September 1.

My daughter and son in law just returned from visiting my GS who is in the Air Force and stationed outside of Anchorage. They loved it so much they are talking about getting a summer home there. Don't know about the winters there but my daughter says it is beautiful.

We went about 5 years ago on a riverboat cruise which was very nice and intimate. No huge crowds of people and was very relaxing. Were able to go to places the big cruise ships were not able to go. Would recommend it to anyone.

I have lived here in Alaska since 1969, we moved here from Arizona. What changes we have seen in these past 40 plus years but would I change it, NO. Alaska is a great place to live, also lots of quilt shops. My sister finally came for the first time this summer and was amazed. She finally understood why we live here, she loved it. They had been down to Homer and the quilt store there is in a hardware store. She found perculator tops for her coffee pots that she had been looking for. Small world.

I love Alaska and go every two years. I do have a daughter who lives there so that is a plus. We do something different each time we go and this year we did the Inside Passage which was just beautiful. If you like unspoilt nature then you will like Alaska. I would recommend the day trip into Denalli National Park, saw all wildlife and was blown away by it. Next time we are going to hire a motor home and do a trip further up North we would like to go to Fairbanks in particular. Seward, Homer are lovely places.

A friend & I went 5 years ago, by cruise, and we had a wonderful time. I had been ill for over a year, but no one could find out what it was, so tossing caution to the wind, I went. The weather was beautiful, (end of May) the air was great, I could get air real good, I was tired a lot but never gave up. After I came home they found out it was my heart that was making me ill all the time, had it fixed, and never felt better. I`d go any time again.

When I was 16 I had the opportunity to go to Alaska with my Grandma for 2 weeks to see her adopted brother. It was such an awesome experience. My Grandma passed away about 6 months after the trip we had together, and I am so glad we had our "special" time together! I would love to go back again with my family. It is absolutely beautiful there!

Absolutely GO ! Even if you aren't the "outdoors type" I took the land & sea tour, 3 days land and then the Cruise. It's such a beautiful state. If I could afford it I'd go back again in a heartbeat!
