300$ to reformat a new computer!!!!!!!!What!!!!!! I would have taken that sucker back where I bought it on the first time it went out and if they wouldnt help Id write to the manufacturer and be on the phone to Clark Howard on CNN. And, Id never ever buy another computer by that manufacturer again -
not helpful now but it sounds like you just need a new one. sharet

QUIT taking it to the Geeks....find a different repairman. My best friend was doing like you -- taking one back to the same place over and over and over again. ALWAYS was her fault. I convinced her to go to a different place. The computer got fixed and no more problems.

In answer to your question --- NO, that's never happened to me. If you have a good virus/spamware program and you're not in deleting program stuff, you shouldn't have these problems. Obviously the place you're taking it to isn't fixing it --- but they're getting money out of you.

and BTW -- you can reformat your computer FOR FREE! The installation disks you get with the computer will do that....research on the internet and learn how to do it!!!!

Thank you for the suggestion. Will holding the F10 fix work for Vista as well. I have a laptop that just croaked. Was my BIL who is dead and can't bypass the Administrator password to change it.

Not sure what type of computer software that you have but, if you have windows xp I can give you some suggestions about how to restart it from scratch so it may save you some money..You probably already tried this though :) ...Shut the computer off..and BEFORE you reboot it..hold down the f10 button..DO NOT take finger off until after the computer is rebooted ..It should take you to a screen that will ask you if you want to return to factory condition..hit yes..It will take awhile but usually that fixes alot of problems..If all else fails, it maybe cheaper to just buy a new computer than keep paying those huge amounts to fix it..I think you can get a brand new one for right around 400.00 ..(some cheaper, some more expensive)...I love mine but there are times I just want to chunk it out the window..

Thanks to all of you for all of the sympathy, help and suggestions. I looked up the lemon laws for CA. They tried to get me to take it home saying that BSOD happens often. If I had taken it home then they could have gotten out of the warranty. I took it in today and was finally able to talk to the Manager of Best Buy. He said that they will do a hardware check on it this time and see if that is causing the problem. I am NOT going to give up! SOMEONE is going to do something to fix the thing or give me a new one. I am going to write to Dell and let them know what problems I am having. I have no other software or peripherals - just the tower, monitor, mouse, and keyboard. I found that the Federal gov't has lemon laws for things like computers. As I understand it, the product has to have a history of failure and attempted repairs and the cut off seems to be 4 times. Well this is my fourth time. I will get all my paperwork together and documentation together so I can make a detailed complaint.

Glad your computer was fixed. I had lots of RAM - it is barely used. Don't download much and don't add lots of other programs/software. Didn't need any of the extras as I am the only one who uses it and am an "old lady". :D :D :D I am also using a good virus program as I wanted to put it on my laptop as well and perhaps my old computer. It was less expensive that way.

I got my PC from Altex Electronics in 2007; the salesman "tried" to sell other frivolous options (webcam, game controllers, game units, Microsoft Word, ...{which I already have}.... etc..) for it and I denied the extras. I paid over $900.00 cash for the whole package; keyboard, tower, screen, mouse, & speakers.
Anyway, after (3) months with it, one morning I noticed a very thin line running up and down vertically on my screen; first thing I did was call the service tech at Altex.
He said bring it in; your pixels have been ruptured or it's your mother board that's faulty.

To make a long story short, it was taken in, swapped out for another screen, mother board was fine, and PC ran slowwwwwwwwwww for many months; it was very frustrating & many virus attacks to endure.

I buckled down, bought some more memory RAM and a better virus protection program, and now it runs and surfs the way I expect it to.

Good luck, I don't think it's a "lemon", but have the service man check it to see if it needs more memory; or a compatible virus program.
There are dozens and dozens more Virus Protection programs out there, so go what's best for you and your PC.

Not sure about Vista..you might be able to check with either the Vista site or call them..I do know it can be done (just not sure how)..Computers get refurbished and sold quite often ..Also, if you ever have to do a complete recovery make sure that you transfer any photo's or added programs onto a disc before you do it..I have lost so many pictures..
