Help---I can't change my avatar

The first photo I tried as an avatar is too small. Neither me nor the quilt can be seen well. I have one of just my wallhanging that I want to use instead. I can't change it!
Here's what I have tried....
---I click a check onto "get rid of this avatar"
---at that time, the browser bar is automatically cleared
---I click "submit"
---my profile says it is updated and avatar is gone
so then...
---I click browser, select my new choice
---click submit
---my profile says it is updated
---the avatar that shows up is exactly the same as the first time!
I tried other photos too, to be sure I hadn't accidentally selected the same photo as the first one. So, I know I didn't do that.
Now what?

Try clicking on your refresh icon at the very top of your screen and see if it makes you be able to see it. Right now I see a wall hanging with no humans in it :D And a beautiful quilt if I may say so :D :D

I changed mine a week or so ago and my old one kept coming back...... I did everything that Admin and others on the board said to do......... clicked refresh button, deleted temperary files, deleted cookies, and still it didn't change.......................that is..........on my computer it did, but on others they saw the new picture. Finally after 3 days it showed up on mine. Then the old one would come back. I don't know what was going on, and I don't know which one will show up today on my computer....

My old picture is back...........the dog and cat.
The new one was up yesterday..........my bed and a scrappy quilt.
Is this competition between them. I still say the Ghosts did it.
Oh well, maybe tomorrow my newer one will appear.
