Default help with ruffle for apron

I am making some children's aprons for a friend. The pattern calls for premade ruffle for the bottom, but I want to make my own with matching fabric. I haven't sewn clothes in so long. How much extra fabric should I add to make a ruffle? I don't want it real gathered.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

A full ruffle is 2 to 3 times the length of the finished edge. So if the edge of the apron is 12", then you need gather 24 to 36 inches for the ruffle.

It depends of how much ruffle you want. At least twice the length of where you are putting it will give a slight ruffle. An average ruffle is usually three times the length and you can increase it from there if you want it really full.
